BRO reviews 61 Sino-India border roads projects

Amid reports suggesting massive military infrastructure development by China, top officials of the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) met in New Delhi on Tuesday to review the progress of 61 roads to be built by it along the Sino-India border. With a budgetary allocation of Rs 5,425 crore, the BRO has been entrusted with the task of completing the roads along the border and developing over 2,000 km road network in the northeastern region, a defence ministry release said.
The annual conference of the chief engineers of 18 projects of BRO is being held to "discuss various issues of BRO relating to problems being faced in the construction of roads and tunnels of strategic importance," it said.

Issues such as enhancement of work capability, diversification and future challenges for the organisation will also be taken up for discussion during the conference.

The BRO has already completed work on 15 of the 61 roads and work on the rest was in progress.

"Two major projects - Rohtang Tunnel and Basholi Bridge in Himachal Pradesh and Jammu and Kashmir respectively - are progressing well," the release added.

BRO is the most inefficient entity under MoD. Most of the roads in Sikkim Assam and Arunachal Pradesh are under their jurisdiction and they made them hell to travel. People are sick of it.

They keep reviewing the roads..How about start building them for a change..

I dont know why the govt is not considering Private players to bring more efficiency in constructing these border roads. BRO is the worst in Planning and execution. They do not possess modern equipments and skills required for tough terrains. People who are staying in these border areas can tell the anomalies of BRO. 6 months back, I visited north sikkim and the average speed of our vehicle was 20 kmph. We call it a strategic road, but I did not see the road there. No pavements, no topping..
The situation is not very different for the road from Tezpur to Tawang. This 347 Km stretch takes 14 hours. Just imagine the road conditions. BRO is working on it since 2007 and they made it more inaccessible. What kind of Review they do? Only MoD and God knows. :flame:

If its an Environmental Clearance issue, it is well understood. But Land Acquisition in the Remote Border Areas are pretty absurd as an excuse. All derailments are primarily bacause of Poor Technology, Skills and high level of corruption in the ground level and this Organisation does not have the sense of Accountability. BRO hardly has any competency in Building border roads. I have seen the BRO guys are selling Diesel to the Locals to fill their pockets. They take decades to complete their projects. BRO should come under Indian Army.

:lol: I think BRO thinks if Tanks and heavy vehicles can go in the road then the objectice is achieved. These roads are ment for tanks and not our vehicles....

I think they should just make mud roads for Army transportation with less cost and we can build it fast and thus matching Chinees infrastructures...:lol:

Land acquisition is not a issue. In the border areas land belong to the Govt.

Admitting that land acquisition is a problem, the Director General of the BRO, Lt Gen M C Badhani, says, “Procedural delays (in land acquisition) have to be accepted. The locals bring forward their own concerns and aspirations and we try to take those on board. It is important to have local support.”

Even as the government has started the work of widening the Jammu-Pathankot and Jammu-Srinagar national highways, a delay in the acquisition of land has created hurdles in the progress of these projects.

Though the land from Kathua to Kunjwani has already been acquired, the authorities have been facing problems in acquiring land from Kunjwani to Satwari to further expand the highway.

Similarly, the authorities are facing problems in acquiring land to expand the Jammu-Srinagar national highway at different places. At some places, the land owners have rejected the compensation being offered to them.

Dr Pawan Kotwal, divisional commissioner, Jammu, recently convened a high-level meeting to review the progress of land acquisition for various projects, including the expansion of the highways.

The divisional commissioner called upon the officers to gear up the process of land acquisition under various road projects. He also urged the Border Road Organisation (BRO) to take up the matter under its jurisdiction so that no road project suffered due to a delay in land acquisition.

Discussions were held on issues pertaining to the payment of rent and compensation to the rightful owners in respect of land to be acquired for border fencing in Jammu, Samba, Kathua and other districts.

Dr Kotwal exhorted the officers to work with zeal, synergy and dedication so that the pending cases of payments for land acquisition for border fencing and BRO roads could be settled at the earliest.

Land acquisition cases for various roads under project Sampark were also reviewed. He was apprised of the progress in the acquisition of land for the construction/improvement of Samba-Riyan-Mawa-Regal road, Jakh-Khjipur-Khour-Nandpur-Narayanpur road, Khour-Ramnagar-Pakhuri road, NH-1A from Chhakhatriyan-Katal-Londi-Bobiya, Rajpura-Madwal-Phulpur road, Parol-Korepunnu-Parole-Rajpura road, NH-1A to AP Karote, Malla-Jugwan road, Akhnoor-Pallanwala road, Akhnoor-Jourian road, and Agra Chauck- RS Pura-Dablehar-Rathana-Amla-Khour road.

He also reviewed the progress of land acquisition and requisition cases for border fencing, construction and the widening of roads under Sampark at a meeting attended by civil administration functionaries and representatives of the BSF, Army and other agencies.
