THE UK is more powerful than Russia and China, an influential study has found.
Britain defied its larger rivals to be named the world’s second-most powerful nation in the European Geostrategy report. Britain has been ranked as the world’s second most powerful nation on account of its military and regiments like the Royal Marines.
The report also considered Britain’s nuclear capabilities, led by its Trident submarines.
The US was identified as the world's only superpower while the UK was called a Global Power. Trailing in third, fourth and fifth were France, China and Russia - only good enough for them to be labelled as Regional Powers.
The list takes into consideration a country's armed forces, economy and 'soft power'.
Britain's elite special forces and incoming aircraft carriers were considered to be positive factors.
The Royal Navy also operates an always-at-sea nuclear deterrent with its nuke submarine fleet. Yet Britain can only use around 200 nuclear weapons, while the US and Russia have around 7,000 each.
It was in terms of soft power that the UK excelled. A ranking system places Britain second in the soft power list, marginally behind the US.
The list takes into account a country's relations with other nations, education system and its cultural influence through music, TV, film and language.
