A senior government insider said there was also uncertainty about preparatory talks with EU leaders.

Britain could remain in the EU until late 2019, almost a year later than predicted, ministers have privately warned senior figures in the City of London.

Prime minister Theresa May has been expected to enact article 50 in January, setting in train the formal two years of negotiations before Brexit.

Despite great political pressure to stick to that timetable, she may be forced to delay because her new Brexit and international trade departments will not be ready, a City source said.

French and German elections are also being cited as a cause for delay. Britain might not invoke article 50 until France has voted next May or even until after the German poll in September, ministers confided to senior City contacts.

“You can’t negotiate when you don’t know who you’re negotiating with,” said a City insider. And a cabinet minister confirmed to The Sunday Times that there were “some challenges” in the French and German electoral timetables.

The prospect of a year’s delay will anger hardline Eurosceptic Conservative MPs and “leave” voters who expected a speedy Brexit.

Nigel Farage, the former leader of the UK Independence Party (Ukip), warned that failure to deliver on the EU referendum result and curb immigration could lead to mass demonstrations on the streets.

There was a “real danger” that millions of people who voted for the first time in the EU referendum would be tempted to join extremists such as the English Defence League if they felt ignored, Farage said.

David Davis, the Brexit secretary, and Liam Fox, the international trade secretary, indicated after May appointed them that they expected Britain to leave at the start of 2019.

However, their new Whitehall departments are being set up from scratch and the situation is “chaotic”, said one senior City source who has spoken to ministers.

“Ministers are now thinking the [article 50] trigger could be delayed to autumn 2017,” said another source, who had discussions with two senior ministers. “They don’t have the infrastructure for the people they need to hire. They say they don’t even know the right questions to ask when they finally begin bargaining with Europe.”

A cabinet source said Davis and Fox might not be able to make much progress before France, in particular, goes to the polls. “That is an issue that is a problem,” the source said. “Liam and David have talked through these issues and are very aware of the sensitivities.

“So it could be that little progress is made to start with and then you start to see [it at] a pace after that.”

Another senior government insider said there was also uncertainty about preparatory talks with EU leaders, in which Britain would try to reach informal understandings on key issues before triggering article 50.

“I’m not sure they are going to be ready,” the source said. “There is an issue about these preliminary talks - no one even seems to know what the substance will be.”

I think reverting to WTO rules would be better than remaining in the single market. It would mean tariffs of about 10 percent but the economic cost of single market regulation is much more damaging.

Two strong cross-parlimentry groups have just formed to put pressure on May for an earlier exit.

Yes, fully agree with that. We don't want the rules of the single market on us.

I honestly dont give a shit anymore as long Italy isnt hurt from this. Its just important that the UK is not positioned any betetr than any otehr EU nation.

Nothing is going to change, except that they won't have a vote.

We'll leave the market then. It's no big deal to us. Trade deals the world over are being talked over now. There is no way anyone in Europe is going to dictate to us.

We've been told that not a single worker working right now will move.

We've been told that not a single worker working right now will move.

I don't want that. Workers who have set up family lives here are welcome to stay. Single people should be subject to points systems.
Anyway, it's just the rules of the single market are too much for us.

shes playing clever end of 2019 is not far from the elections may 2020 elections single market access is important but they want freedom of movement in return. lets see what she has instore. or what will the new pm have in store

As long as we get Brexit even if it is Slowexit is fine by me. I only hope this is not some convoluted plan to avoid leaving. I don't think not a single person should be thrown out - it simply is wrong. But time the drawbridge is pulled up. After that only if your a graduate from top 500 universities with specific skillset that is in short supply in UK or can bring in £1 million in investment cash do you get the entry to UK. Have a extenuating grounds that allows for special abilities like maybe some stunning looking Ukranian gymnast who will contribute toward the genetic pool.

Beyond that no migrants zone. Have a strict quota set at 3000 for refugees from war and strife. Once you hit 3,000 bang. Wait till next year.

I have always been unhappy about this European Union which I felt was racist in it's very conception. My grandfather's generation fought and spilled blood for the British Empire. That generation has sons buried all over Europe, from Flanders, Neuve Chapple to Monte Cassino. Yet some poor sod from Slovak Republic could just move here and draw benefits when they did squat all in the making of this country. Now Britain can take centre stage in the world where she belongs. The world is the market. And that market is getting bigger and bigger. Europe as percentage of that world market is shrinking.

Here is names of some of our dead - from the names you bet they are from what is now Pakistan - the exception being three guy's who are probably Algerian "soldat" in the French Foreign Legion (FFL).

And here is map showing the centre of economic gravity. In 1AD it hovered over Pakistan. By 1950s it was firmly over North Atlantic. When UK joined EC had shifted slightly east over north of Norway. Today is has swung far to the east and is just north of Kazakstan and is moving further east every year. This means the global market is where the real action is. If you can bite even 1% of Chinese market that is more than all of Slovakia.

UK's independent outlook is understandable as they have always maintained a "Free" Sovereign vision about their own policies and rules

There is absolutely no reason why they should take in all the poor from Europe into their country

UK/British have forged alliances and have left alliances for last 1,000 Years this is not the first time they will decide to be "Independent" state

It would be easier to trade with UK for international countries with no excess baggage from European Union, or what is the term

"Freeloaders"

  • British Rock / Music 100% British , 0% European Union
  • EPL 100% british teams , 0% European clubs
  • Cricket 100% british Game of Gentleman , 0% Europeans know what a Googly is
  • Wimbeldon 100% sports of Able Gentleman , classy Grass surface , Europe plays on clay puff, can't afford grass so they make up surface
  • Harry Potter - 100% British , 0% European Union
  • 007 100% British , 0 % European union
  • British Accent 100% british , have you heard someone from Holland speak ? Or Finland
When they have a lovely little country where people work with each other , understand and respect each other

Why would they allow folks from god knows where in Europe with their Massive egoes to just move in and bring in their own biases , just look at the problems in Croatia / Serbia etc or Problems in Ukraine or Russia , imagine all these groups coming to England and then bringing their social problems into Britain, I mean just this last year I learned Norway & Sweden don't get along

Also Logically if you look at it

Imagine Population of England / UK / British Island = 1 Million just imagine

People have nice life style (Decent for most) then all of sudden 20 Million visitors come from lets say Italy or Romania or May be Ukraine.

So suddenly now there is pressure on local society to take care of 20 Million visitors which puts burden on social system , and it causes for services and public services to go down the toilet?
It is a logical scenario which happens now with EU, people would be constantly moving into the
"BEST" cities & towns for jobs who would want to stay in Romania or Italy or Ukraine or Luxembourg or Sweden

EU countries were just hoping Britain will keep coughing up 10-50 Billion dollars to help pay for negative performance of poor EU nations but People of Britain saw otherwise

Right now all looks like they want a Brexit without Brexit:sarcastic:And we need to wait till next parliament election.

You can wait, and what will happen is far more stringent brand of conservatives. They will win a landslide. The formal process of article 50 will probably begin next year, this "could" or "might" stuff is baloney. The will of the people is the will of the people.

lol... did you just make a random list to piss off euros?

EU sucks, forcing it's member countries to add value added tax to everything sold within the union.

From a business perspective EU is VERY BAD.

To take an example say I have a business where I sell computers to the world and my business is based in Germany. What the EU forces me to do is add value added tax on top of the item/computers price or include it on the price.

To make things even more difficult this so called "VAT" is different in all EU countries.

So if I sell a computer from Germany to Italy the VAT might be 15%, and if I sell the same computer to France the VAT might be 30%.

On the other hand if I have the same business in the USA / UK or any other non EU country, I don't even need to think about this VAT issue.

There are companies in the USA that sell products to EU countries, some add the EU VAT, while others don't. It's up to them.

But if you are based in a EU country, then the EU FORCES you. Instead of helping business it's twisting your arm!

If a computer costs say $100 in the USA on amazon.com, if you are based in a EU country you will need to pay MORE to order that computer, while others outside the EU pay the $100 only. That is because depending on which EU country you live in the VAT is added on top of the price while buying.

So it not only is bad for business even consumers in the EU need to pay more money for goods simply because they live in a EU country.

I just mentioned the VAT issue, but there are countless other regulations and silly rules, that is bad for businesses.

Actually now that the UK has left the EU even I might conduct more business with the UK, which wouldn't have happened if they stayed in the EU. For me it's the VAT issue.

A country that is not in the EU has an advantage over a country that is a member of the EU when doing business. Only exception is import/export to and from EU, but this can be solved easily with a trade deal like Turkey has with the EU which means free customs.
