Haitian President Jovenel Moise was shot dead by unidentified attackers in his private residence overnight in an "inhuman and barbaric act" and his wife was injured, Interim Prime Minister Claude Joseph said on Wednesday.

He said the police and army had the security situation under control but gunshots could be heard throughout the capital after the attack, which occurred amid a rising wave of politically linked violence in the impoverished Caribbean nation.

With Haiti politically divided, and facing a growing humanitarian crisis and shortages of food, there are fears of widespread disorder.

"The president was injured and succumbed to those injuries," Joseph said in an interview with Radio Caraibes.

According to Joseph, the assassination occurred around 1 a.m. when armed intruders, some of whom allegedly spoke Spanish, shot Moise in the head, local news outlet Juno7 reported.

Port-au-Prince had been suffering an increase in violence as gangs battle one another and police for control of the streets.

The bloodshed is driven by worsening poverty and political instability. Moise faced fierce protests after taking office as president in 2017, with the opposition accusing him this year of seeking to install a dictatorship by overstaying his mandate and becoming more authoritarian - charges he denied.

"All measures are being taken to guarantee the continuity of the state and to protect the nation," Joseph said.

Moise had ruled by decree for more than a year after the country failed to hold legislative elections and wanted to push through a controversial constitutional reform.

His refusal to step down led to wide-spread protests among pro-democracy protestors, who were dispersed by police forces using tear gas and rounds of live fire. According to reports, police forces also attacked a number of journalists who were covering the riots, leaving at least one in critical condition.

At least 23 people, including a top judge and senior police officer were arrested that same month over accusations of attempting to carry out a coup against the president.

The US Embassy said in a statement it would be closed on Wednesday due to the "ongoing security situation."

The United States is assessing the "tragic attack" and President Joe Biden will be briefed on the assassination, the White House said on Wednesday.

"We're still gathering information," White House press secretary Jen Psaki said on MSNBC. "We're still assessing right now."

This is a developing story.

Well...from the absolute dearth of responses to a black President being assassinated...apparently black lives don't matter here on PDF.

lol! Is this the only thread on this topic? I figured there would be at least 3 or 4 threads opened and then merged under one and this one just never got the merge yet.

But back on topic, this assassinations is getting more bizarro by the day. Not only the amount of individuals involved in this plot, but that two of them were Americans of Haitian descent and 17 others were Columbians! And there are -- if I'm not mistaken -- 11 more still on the run that the authorities are looking for.

On top of all that, the prime minister has taken over the power vacuum by default/decree (the irony not withstanding considering similar terms were used by Moise to extend his temporary presidential position and had postponed the elections....) BUT, another guy came out of the blue and said that HE was just appointed prime minister by Moise last week and that his authority would take effect this week which is a week after Moise was killed! So there is this huge situation with the power vacuum grab on top of the bizarre mercenaries that consists of so many people trying to pull off this assassination whom the majority of them come from a country that has been mired in drug cartels and killings and mercenaries for hire etc.. etc., not to mention the strained connection the US has had with Columbia because of the decades of drug proliferation and so on.

Acting Prime Minister Claude Joseph has declared himself to be the country's interim ruler until elections can be organized, which are expected to occur in September and November. However, some Haitians have not backed him because the day before his death, Moïse appointed Ariel Henry, a neurosurgeon, to replace him. The US, United Nations, and other international bodies have recognized Joseph's claim, which Bocchit explained was due to Henry not having had time to organize a new government.
NOTE: apparently the parliament has appointed the speaker as interim President

This entire saga is beyond a fiction novel that Hollywood couldn't even make this into a great, Oscar-winning motion picture!

All the anti-US sentiments are out in full force as a result of this assassination. The Haters are out in full force, my bro, and if you're on one of their networks or forums and speak against that view, you get stomped on ugly like it's no one's business LOL!

It's possible since anything is possible, but this was so sloppy with way too many people involved and way too many odd nationalities that it just doesn't make any sense, not to mention how sloppy it was but especially the lack of motive that most haters seem to avoid like the plague because that would put the whole conspiracy theory to rest. There is absolutely NOTHING for the US to gain out of taking this guy out, lol.
