OZHIKODE: The indomitable spirit of India has made possible the impossible whenever the country was denied key technology, said A Sivathanu Pillai, chief of BrahMos Aerospace, here on Wednesday.

Delivering the convocation address at the National Institute of Technology-Calicut (NIT-C), he said the development of the re-entry structure for Agni missile, the multi-function radar and the supersonic BrahMos cruise missile, reflected India's never-say-die attitude.

Though he lauded the contributions of young engineers from various national institutes, he lamented the trend of young minds migrating to foreign shores after completing their education in the country.

The IITs in the country has been getting an annual funding of Rs 900-Rs 1,300 crores. Despite investing much money on students, almost all them have been migrating to developed countries, he said.

"It means the knowledge gained by them is being used for the development of countries other than India at our cost," he said, adding that students passing out from the NITs have become the major brain resource for the nation's important programmes.

On the BrahMos-2 project for developing a hypersonic reusable cruise missile, Pillai said it would give a significant boost to the country's defence capabilities.

He had earlier in June said the missile would be ready for test flight in 2017.

"The BrahMos- 2 programme has started with its design and basic technology development is currently underway," he said. Pillai said the missile, with a speed of Mach- 7 would deliver the warhead, assess the destruction of the target and come back and get ready to go again.

The convocation witnessed the graduation of 1,099 students — 656 undergraduates, 430 postgraduates and 13 PhD scholars.

Tathva 2012, the annual techno-management festival of NIT-C, was also inaugurated on Wednesday.

The three-day event would feature lectures, technical competitions and an array of gaming and design contests.

Around 1,500 students from 300 colleges across south India would participate. C G Krishnadas Nair, chairman of the board of governors of NIT-C and M N Bandopadhyay, director of NIT-C, along with faculty members, students and parents were present at the function.

SO BRAHMOS-2 is infact a UCAV with ground attack or anti ship warfare role ( with no countermeasure from enemy) . now that is a good system even if we field it by 2020 !

. .
Isn't that a bit weird for UCAV to travel at mach 7. Why not just make a UCAV that carries Brahmos 2.:undecided:

that is the beauty of it ! imagine su-30mki carrying brahmos-2 anywhere in vicinty of enemy and brahmos-2 delivers payload at enemy's doorstep and back for next mission ! a UCAV that is carried by an aircraft is hell of a concept !:azn:

Looks like brahmos-2 is actaully hstvd (avatar) ...:victory:

here is a pic of brahmos-2 to first on PDF :)

Hstvd is the technology demonstrator and nothing else. It is by DRDO not Brahmos Aerospace. Russians have nothing to do with it. But yes the technology of Scramjet Engine which India will prove by hstdv is directly applicable to Brahmos2. Technologies used in hstdv will have many other applications in other missiles and space rockets. Brahmos is just an application of hstdv.

Really ??? I don't think Brahmos-2 will be as is HSTVD.
Article say it will deliver the payload observer the result and return. So many more modifications in design will follow. And this is a just a HSTVD prototype

Bhai khush ho raha hu hone de na kam to dono ek hi karne vale he :P jiske liye thi uska reply ata nai tum log pichhu pad gaye :flame:

I thought Brahmos-2 will be only indian venture and NOT JV ???
Anybody like to throw light on it ??? If JV then again it come with 290Km tag :hitwall:

.
We knew that Brahmos 2 will be hypersonic

But the features of Brahmos 2 revealed in interview are totally new and unexpected for us

hope its true

hahahhaa I would like to belive it ;) but I can't.
Official versions will have the same range evenif we have the full technology. That's why we're planning Mark-2s on our own so that the official tag can be removed.
I know Russia will provide us the tech. But can't openly. They won't spoil their own name for that.
So only Indian versions developed by our own PSUs will cross MTCR line.

The missile will also arm the Project 15B destroyers of the Indian Navy. In Russian navy Project 21956, destroyers are most likely to be equipped with BrahMos II.

Also the future designs may include the option of missile delivering the warhead and returning to base, as suggested by Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam.

The BrahMos will have a excellent accuracy of 10m or less. The stealth technology combined with the incredible low flying ability will make the missile hard to detect. The kinetic energy of the missile is projected to be 36 times that of any existing cruise missile system and can also be used for Anti-ship warfare. The American X-15A Waverider is reported to be the only other hypersonic cruise missile program.

The BrahMos will ably support the missile offensive of India. It will add to the BrahMos 1 and the under testing Nirbhay Subsonic cruise missile with a range of over 700 Km.The BrahMos II will have a Scramjet engine. Unlike the Ramjets, the Scramjets allows the combustion to occur in a supersonic airflow expanding its operating range above Mach 4.

The missile is expected to enter service by 2015-2017 and may well be integrated on fighters like the SU-30MKI, FGFA and PAK-FA which would make it more destructive.

As of now the missile is in an initial testing phase.

Here's a SU-30MKI armed with the deadly Brahmos tucked into the under-engine nacelle:

I also found this on wiki:

BrahMos, the India-Russia joint-venture, has developed an anti-aircraft carrier variant of the supersonic cruise missile and successfully tested it recently.

Sharing the information, BrahMos Chief A. Sivathanu Pillai said here that with this the organisation achieved the capability to attack aircraft carriers using the supersonic vertical dive variant of the missile that could travel up to 290 km.

The Hindu : Today's Paper / NATIONAL : Anti-aircraft carrier variant of BrahMos successfully test-fired

So I guess its not just China that has this now :)
