Bomb at Market in India's Remote Northeast Kills 8
GAUHATI, India September 13, 2013 (AP)
By WASBIR HUSSAIN Associated Press
A homemade bomb exploded Friday at a market in India's violence-wracked northeast, killing at least eight people and injuring seven others, police said.
The fatalities included two policemen, a police officer said. He said the explosion occurred in Imphal, the capital of remote Manipur state. The officer spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to talk to the media.
Details were not available immediately. The region is about 470 kilometers (260 miles) southeast of Gauhati, the capital of Assam state.
No group has claimed responsibility for the explosion. At least 17 separatist groups are active in Manipur state.
The rebels say the region is ignored by the central government. Most residents are ethnically closer to groups in Myanmar and China than to the rest of India.
