The disappointment of losing the ICC World Twenty20 final to Sri Lanka has led to many Indians squarely placing the blame of the defeat on Yuvraj Singh's shoulders. And as is their wont, the fans' misdirected anger saw them reportedly pelting stones at the all-rounder's house in Chandigarh. (Yuvraj's house attacked)
These reports got many celebrities, mostly from Bollywood, riled up and they took to social media in support of the beleaguered southpaw and condemned the shameful behaviour of the people.
Amitabh Bachchan defended the cricketer, who has become the target of fans' wrath back home. The Bolywood living legend wrote on his blog. "Ok .... so we lost to Sri Lanka in the World Cup final T20 tonight .. yes disappointed, but proud of our team and our boys for reaching the final, against the best teams in the world .. it was just not our day and the better team won ... congratulations to Sri Lanka, who played really well .." (Don't judge Yuvraj by one bad day: Harbhajan)
Columnist and writer Shobhaa De tweeted, "What poor losers we are! Shame on those throwing stones on Yuvraj 's home." (Dhoni mum on Yuvraj)
Actor Varun Dhawan, whose 'Main Tera Hero' is currently out, expressed anger, tweeting, "Yuvi won us the World Cup, he gave us happiness when he was still having cancer. how can people forget that #Shame...
Continuing in the same vein, he wrote on the micro-blogging site, "how can people be so daft in cricket you sometimes loose and sometimes win just agree that lanka played better today (sic).
He added, "Heard that people are throwing stones at yuvi's house. how stupid and immature..." (Don't blame Yuvraj, says father)
Actor-director-producer Arbaaz Khan wanted fans to move on. He wrote on twitter, "Yuvi has been a match winner, yesterday he had an off day, unfortunate it had to be a WC final, he's still a great player.. Lets move on..." (Don't crucify Yuvraj: Sachin)
Director Madhur Bhandarkar tweeted: "Who are these idiots who are pelting stones just because we lost a game? Have we forgotten it was @YUVSTRONG12 who won us both d World Cups?"
Actor Dino Morea also tweeted in support of Yuvraj, writing: "REALLY?? These people need to grow a BRAIN. PLAIN STUPID."
He added, "Wow, INDIA wins a Final, we put them so High up on a Pedestal, INDIA looses, and we rip them apart. Guys it's a sport, win some, loose some."
Yuvraj also found support from his Punjab teammate and friend Harbhajan Singh, who urged fans to not be bitter about just "one bad day".
"Shocking to c every1 blaming @yuvstrong12. Guys this man has won u 2wc's. One of the rare match winners India has produced," tweeted Harbhajan.
Harbhajan called for some understanding while reviewing the left-hander's performance. "From 1st 19wc to natwest to 2007t20 to 2011wc. Find me a player who has done so much in big matches. 1 bad day n we become so bitter," the veteran off-spinner asked Yuvraj's detractors.
