Senior Awami League leader Mohammad Nasim on Friday said the BNP and its key partner Jamaat-e-Islami were conspiring together to foil the 1971 war crimes trials.
Khaleda Zia is plotting with Jamaat to thwart the trials of the war criminals through countrywide violence including killing police, attacking minorities, setting prayer mats on fire inside the mosque, torching the national flag and vandalising Shaheed Minars, he said.
Jamaat and its student wing, Islami Chhatra Shibir, were far more dangerous than snakes, he observed. BNP will be destroyed by them.
The former Home Ministers remarks came in the evening at a rally of the ruling 14-Party alliance at Gaibandhas Sundarganj.
He said, The Awami League may have its share of mistakes and the people will decide about that. But those who are killing people by torching vehicles and support tormentors of minorities, Jamaat and Shibir, the people have learned about their real face.
Nasim, also a ruling party Presidium member, said they were visiting Sundarganj to convey their condolences and support to the victims of the recent violence by Jamaat, Shibir there.
After the International Crimes Tribunal-1 sentenced Jamaat number two Delwar Hossain Sayedee to death on Feb 28, Jamaat and Shibir activists unleashed a string of violence across the country.
Bamondanga Railway Station at Sundarganj was also attacked in the afternoon that day. Sayedee supporters later also attacked and vandalised the local police camp, office of the Awami Leagues local unit, Muktijoddha Sangsad office, Belka Union Parishad office in the Upazila, residence of the Upazila Vice-Chairman and houses of several local Awami League leaders.
Several people including police officials were also killed in this violence while some others were injured.
