BNP hartal a demo of despicable politics: Indian daily

NEW DELHI, Feb 11 (BSS): An Indian English language daily criticised the opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) for unleashing violence in Bangladesh by calling a nationwide strike that paralysed Bangladesh Monday that injured at least 83 people.

"It is essentially a demonstration of despicable politics by Bangladesh Nationalist Party-the country's largest opposition party," wrote the Pioneer in an editorial here Friday.

"Desperate to get back to power and bolstered by recent victories in the local elections, former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia has gone back to her old, vile ways to disrupt functioning of the present government in Bangladesh," it said.

It said, Khaleda's party called for the strike to protest the construction of an international airport at Arial Beel in Munshiganj district-a project that had little support from local residents and earlier, had led to protests-but the same day, after a police officer died in the ensuing clash, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina announced that the airport would be moved to another location.

"Withdrawing the strike would have been the appropriate response of a responsible Opposition leader but instead Begum Zia chose to go ahead and organise anyway. Though the BNP has claimed that the strike had popular support, in reality most people could not care anymore about Monday's strike than they did about the dozens organised in recent years."

"As always it was merely another occasion for BNP politicians and their followers to take to the streets in a vulgar show of strength and then, just for good measure, clash with the police and set ablaze a few buses to ensure that their activities made it to the front page of national dailies. Indeed, violence and vandalism were the only elements that distinguished the BNP's latest stunt from its previous versions as skirmishes were reported across the country throughout the duration of the dawn-to-dusk hartal" it also said.

The editorial further said, the BNP had legitimised its irresponsible actions by blaming the Awami League-led government for a string of problems that have hit Bangladesh in recent months. These include the fall of the Dhaka Stock Exchange, rising food prices and last year's protests by garment industry workers demanding better wages.

"Yet most of these problems are the result of upheavals in the global economy, a matter beyond the hands of the government of Bangladesh. In other cases, the government has taken steps to redress the grievances of the people-for example; workers' wages have been doubled," it said.

lolzz Indian paper is playing role of secretary of AL

why bharat is poking its nose in internal matters of BD??

Of course, writing an opinion piece (editorial) is equivalent to poking your nose in internal matters of another country.

So good to hear this from a 'Journalist'

the journalist wrote what he/she felt about the issue, why are you dragging the whole India in this issue.

if writing abt a neighbouring country is equivalent to poking nose into their internal matter, then in PDF we talk of - nay we literally rip apart - so many nation's defence/politics even history and geography. if you dont like his comments, you express your opinion. the news paper has not forced anyone to read it, like the textbooks being cooked up, neither has it created any furore in BD.

BD is much more mature than to react to an editorial of a newspaper of their own country - let alone other countries!

Its really surprising that not a single BD member show sympathy for injured ..... i think we all know reason

.
1) The hartal happened in Bangladesh. Why is an Indian paper concerned about it? Do Indians think that they own Bangladesh?

2) The Awami League carried out ten times as many hartals when the BNP were in power. How come this paper does not criticize those hartals?

Just read this part again

1) The hartal happened in Bangladesh. Why is an Indian paper concerned about it?

Because the mandate of a newspaper is not restricted by geographical boundaries. Do newspapers in B'desh write ONLY about B'desh?

2) The Awami League carried out ten times as many hartals when the BNP were in power. How come this paper does not criticize those hartals?

Because it's an opinion piece (editorial). He can write whatever he wants. You don't agree with him? Fine, you've got a right to disagree. But he's got a right to write whatever he likes.

when Awami league was in opposition, they have declared a hartal every other day and killed yes, killed thousands. Where were your so called journalists then?

Pioneer in my view is considered a better newspaper than Times of India groups of media So it was the cheapest thing coming from Pioneers to say that Bangladeshi political parties should not hold protest against ruling party over some ill-planned projects that have less public support.

Editorial in a news paper is never a personal opinion. According to international standard of journalism an editorial always represents the official policy of a media outlet. as according to same rules you can have an opinion over issues of other countries that have SOME relevance with your country BUT An Indian saying that Republicans should not criticise conservatives over internal issues of US is like tress passing . a crime than even poking your nose in your neighbour's house.

An opinion or critical piece from Bharati media throwing light on this/these project/s of BD pointing out merits and demerits would have been better than getting angry at BD political parties and ORDERING them not to holding protest over their internal issues which has NO relevance with India is indeed in a bad taste. rather it shows YOU ARE BULLYING BANGLADESHIS.

Sleeping. Sue them if you want to.

But I'm more concerned about the fact that you don't care whether people are injured in these hartals. You are not ashamed that BNP is moving on the lines of the AL by holding these hartals? OK, so the AL is bad (in your opinion). Lets accept that for a minute. So the BNP is doing the EXACT SAME THING as AL, yet you support them?

.
do you even understand the concept behind hartal? the recent price hikes and the many more govt failures are the reason behind this hartals, and although I don't support any sort of hartal, I think this hartals are pretty justifiable. During the BNP regime, Awami league called hartals to put Khaleda out of power, but this hartals are not for Sheikh Hasina to step down but more like a wake up call.
