Goa Minister Dipak Dhavalikar’s wife Lata has waded into controversy after she asked parents not to send their children to convent schools even as she urged women to desist from aping Western culture, saying it has led to rise in incidents of r@pe.
Lata, who is a functionary of controversial right wing organization Sanatan Saunstha, was addressing a convention in Margao on Sunday, when she made this statement.
“Hindu men, while leaving from home, should sport a tilak, while women, kumkum. Always celebrate Gudi Padwa as the Hindu New Year and not January 1. Don’t send your children to convent school… say ‘namaskar’ instead of ‘hello’ when answering a phone call,” she said.
“It’s time we took pride in our rich ancient Indian culture. Now it has become trendy among Indian women not to wear ‘kumkum’ on forehead; wearing tight and revealing clothes, trimming hair and sporting weird hairdos.
“Incidents of r@pe are on the rise, largely owing to the fact that women have adopted western culture,” Lata felt.
When contacted, her husband Dipak Dhavalikar refused to comment.
“I don’t know about any such statement by her. I will get back to you,” he said.
Dipak Dhavalikar is the State Factories and Broilers minister, while Sudin holds the Transport and Public Works Department portfolio in the Goa BJP government.
Both brothers are legislators of Maharashtrawadi Gomantak Party which have supported the Laxmikant Parsekar-led state government.
Last year, Lata’s brother-in-law and minister Sudin Dhavalikar had to face flak when he demanded a ban on bikinis claiming that it was against Indian culture and led to r@pes.
Sudin had later withdrawn his comments that provoked outrage in the state whose beaches and pubs swarm with tourists, including lakhs of foreigners.
Also, Dipak sparked a row when while speaking in the Goa Assembly on a motion congratulating Narendra Modi on BJP’s electoral victory, he had said that he was confident that the PM would develop India into a Hindu nation.

MARGAO: "It's time we took pride in our rich ancient Indian culture. Now, it has become trendy among Indian women in not wearing the kumkum on the forehead, wearing tight and revealing clothes, trimming hair and making weird hairdo, etc...Incidents of r@pe are on the rise, largely owing to the fact that women have adopted western culture."
This was a statement made by one of the speakers at a meeting of the Hindu Janjagruti Sanstha (HJS) at Margao on Sunday. Nothing unusual, given the conservationist outlook of the organization. But when the speaker happens to be the wife of state cabinet minister Pandurang 'Deepak' Dhavalikar, the statements assume significance.
Lata Dhavalikar, who was introduced as a senior member of the Sanatan Sanstha, speaking further, also laid out some guidelines for the protection of Hindu culture: Hindu men, while leaving from home, should sport a tilak, while women, kumkum; celebrate Gudi Padwa as the Hindu new year and not January 1; don't send your children to convent schools; say 'namaskar' instead of 'hello' when answering a phone call.
Exhorting the audience to strongly resist any attempts at conversion of Hindus by those of other faiths, Dhavalikar said, "Remember, it also amounts to treachery of one's religion if one prefers to look the other way in the face of onslaughts on his faith. There's need to create a strong deterrence against conversion of Hindus," she said.
Dhavalikar also came out strongly against cow slaughter and underscored the need to put it to an end.
Earlier, another speaker Shivprasad Joshi, came out strongly against 'Believers' whom he accused of converting Hindus to their faith. He threatened that HJS will disrupt the meeting of such nature that is to be held at Margao next week.
Interestingly, the meet was held on Easter Sunday in the Catholic-dominated South Goa district and the agenda for the meet included "guidance talks on the importance and necessity of establishing a Hindu nation", according to a press release.
Fatorda MLA Vijai Sardesai condemned the meet as a "sign of intolerant times ahead" with the BJP and its fringe elements resorting to divisive tactics. "I had absolutely no clue that this meet was being organized and to have it on Easter Sunday is ridiculous and insensitive not only to the Christian community but the liberal Goan society," said Sardesai.
"This is a result of bankruptcy of ideas, there is no development taking place, therefore the only way to win the next elections for the BJP is by polarizing the masses. It is sad that not many people are speaking out against such signs. Where are the Catholic BJP MLAs? Where is the Congress? We don't have an opposition to fight such fringe elements and that is why they are flourishing," Sardesai added.
