BJP ‘testing waters’ with ad, should apologize, says Congress
NEW DELHI: The Congress on Wednesday alleged that BJP was "testing the waters" by showing the Preamble of the Constitution without the words "socialist" and "secular" in a Republic Day advertisement, adding that RSS has been historically opposed to it.
On a day NDA constituent Shiv Sena demanded that the government drop the two words from the Preamble, Congress said it had only deepened the suspicion behind the controversy over the government advertisement issued on January 26.
"It reflects an affront to the Constitution and is a sacrilegious insult to the national ethos," Congress spokesman Randeep Surjewala said. Congress claimed "these were the words for which BJP's integrity and intent have been doubtful among citizens since its inception".
Quoting Sena's demand, the opposition outfit asked the ruling party to clarify if it agreed with its ally or if it will censure the partner for its outburst. Surjewala said it stretched credulity that the government did not have a copy of the amended Preamble after the words 'socialist' and 'secular' were added in 1976 or that it was a mistake in an artistic impression of the Preamble in an advertisement.
"It further raises doubts as to the overt or covert agenda of testing the waters on a pious day like the Republic Day," he added. "We demand apology from the government to 125 crore people who treat the Constitution as a sacred document."
He asked PM Narendra Modi to spell out his definition of socialism and secularism and how his government proposed to take forward these principles.
