BJP MLAs assault Jammu and Kashmir MLA Sheikh Abdul Rashid for hosting beef party

SRINAGAR: Independent J&K MLA, Sheikh Abdul Rashid, was assaulted by several BJP legislators in the Jammu and Kashmir assembly on Thursday, a day after he hosted a beef party here a day earlier.

Several NC and Congress MLAs rushed to help Rashid as he was being attacked.

The legislator from Langate on Wednesday hosted a beef party on the lawns of the MLA hostel here, where guests were served beef kebabs, 'ristas' (meat balls) and beef patties. "Nobody on earth, no assembly, no court and no institution can stop us from having what we want to have," Rashid said on Wednesday.

The beef row first erupted after a division bench of the High Court in Jammu directed the state to strictly implement the ban in the state as per the law.

The legislator added that his intent wasn't to offend anyone but that he wanted to send a message that "no courts or legislatures can prevent the people from eating what they want". The party was "just to give them (legislators) a clear message that it hardly makes any difference whether you accept or reject the bill... religious matters cannot be kept subservient to courts and assembly," the MLA said.

Many religious organisations called the High Court order "interference in religious affairs" and said the law should be revoked. They also urged the implementation of a ban on liquor in the state, an issue that is now being argued the Supreme Court.

Thugs! In IOK a minority will decide what the majority should eat according to these Hindutva loonies. Maybe all the other Indian states should ban pig and alcohol because Muslims dont eat and drink pork and alcohol respectively. Muslim sensibilities as a minority are disturbed by others consuming a food and drink that is prohibited in their religion.

It's his religion which allows him to have beef, that's not a crime. Then why the heck india is a sickular state? Why don't announce india as a hindu state?

It's not religion that decides what is crime and what is not, but the constitution does which empowered the states with directive principles and a liberty to impose ban on cow slaughter. Either we have to amend the constitution that presumably is secular by nature or else we have to stop claiming it to be a secular one.
