Just a few months before Assembly elections are held in Karnataka, the ruling BJP's worst fears have been confirmed and the Congress is headed for a big win in the state's urban local body elections.

Counting of votes began this morning and it was soon clear that deep internal fissures in the BJP have taken a toll. The Congress has so far already bagged more than 1227 seats of the 3036 (out of 5000) for which results have been declared so far. The BJP, with just around 583 seats, was trailing even the Janata Dal-Secular at about 603 seats.

Of the 65 seats in Mysore, the Congress is leading in 15 while the BJP has managed to bag 11 and JD(S) bagged 15 seats.

While his consistent rebellion over the year and a half has clearly whittled away at the BJP's base, former chief minister BS Yeddyurappa's new Karnataka Janata Party has failed to convert his former party's losses into gains for itself. The strongman is struggling, with only around 200 seats yet.

It is only in Gulbarga, that his newly formed party has done well. In Bellary, home to the powerful Reddy brothers of the BJP, the Congress has grabbed a whopping 21of the 35 wards.

Voting was been held last week in all major towns for over 4,800 seats in 207 urban local bodies.

The BJP had come in third in the 2007 urban local body elections too, but had the managed to get 1180 of the total 5007 seats, with the Congress winning 1606, followed by the JD(S) at 1502

true , bjp has been badly defeated in corporation elections . I think the state bjp leaders are to be blamed here , people are saying bjp gonna 100% loose in the next state elections and cong will come to power . But i feel jagdish shettar deserves a second chance , he is a man with clean character much better than yeddy .

Looks like JDS is the bigger loser. This was bound to happen since Yeddy would have taken a major chink of BJP's vote share. However we cannot extrapolate the results to assembly elections.

Congress, JDS or BJP theres no good leader in Karnataka. It's a miracle the state is able to pull through inspite of idiotic leaders that these parties have

:) True, Shettar has never been in the news for right reasons, but atleast he isnt in the news for wrong reasons either. Common people are so frustrated that we consider one to be good politician if he is just isnt in the news, not caring if he has actually done some good work or not! Pity!

Biggest looser is JDS .in 2007 they got 1502 seats this time 899 ,and BJP seats also reduced to 899 from 1180 in 2007 ....yeddy got 272 and BSRCP got 76

Karnatak will come back to BJP lap once again during national elections, considering a scam a day by UPA government.

Nope karnataka is better of with Congress they are way better than the BJP and thats peoples verdict and i myself am from the state.

BJP here is equivalent to Congress at the center same scams. that's why they are loosing.

BJP messed up big time in Karnataka. i blame Sushma Swaraj & Gadkari. They totally mishandled the state unit. They had an opportunity to make inroads in the south.. & had they given the importance to governance, they could have stabilized their position. Now.. congress will come back in.. & i don't have a problem if SM Krishna takes over the reigns once again in Karnataka!! BJP in Karnataka is a lost cause for the moment...

What Ive been given the impression of.. is the BJP faces the same problem of sorts is Imran Khan here..
that is lack of popular electables..
What works in the urban areas cannot work in the rural.

NOP......Karnatka is a lost battle, its not about rural vs urban .

BJP handled it badly changed chief ministers, corruption charges on chief ministers led to this ,they are going to loose there and that is the regional trend in karnatka .

People in india vote differently in regional and national elections.

Imrans problem is different , he is the whole and sole in PTI something like the new AAMADMI party which came from ANNA movement.

That may be just one problem. Much more than that is factionalism within both Congress and BJP.
A Congressman's biggest enemy is another Congreesman. While a BJP politico's biggest enemy is anothe BJP man. :D
This problem is rampant in both these parties because both parties have tasted power and both party members have now become blood-thirsty for the "loaves and fishes" of public office.

To some extent you are correct...BJP has another problem, it is a cadre based party unlike other parties which is based on and on the foundation of the single individual or familly....So having too much of leader is having a big problem for BJP unlike Congi Party that revolves around Gandhi Familly only...Without Gandhi Familly, Congi Party will be regional party of individual states....

Again, what can BJP do so that it will get more seat in LoK Sabha election in 2014? Any idea of suggestion from posters who know Karnatak politics?

. .
now advani crying that they mishandled karnatka. If they would have done better then atleast one state was certainly voting for BJP in center.

Bring MODI here n there to cover up issues cant help and i will bet on modi now after 6 months otherwise congress is clear winner this time despite of scams.

Now everything depends on north india and west india for BJP. Otherwise both south and east are lost cause.
