Biryani vs Pulao: An exciting social media debate

A very interesting debate online had caused Twitterati bigwigs to come together to answer one burning question that has been trending as one of the most viral hashtags over the last couple of days: What's better, Biryani or Pulao?

While some opted for Biryani for its perfect blend of spices, others chose Pulao for its modest offering of flavours. Some even likened the two to one of the few rivalries that remain eternal; such as India vs Pakistan, Karachi vs Lahore and Tea vs Coffee.

Although it's difficult to ascertain as to who and what triggered the amusing #BiryanivsPulao debate, it sure had caused netizens to weigh in on what they think is the winner of this brutal face-off.

If you think #Biryani can so easily beat #Pulao - think again. Most vegs, meats, lentils, beans will happily mingle with Pulao. #BiryaniVsPulao

People fighting over Biryani vs Pulao on twitter, bring me your best samples and I will help settle the debate. Fair?

While they were proponents of both the dishes picking their side, Biryani won the poll with a narrow margin.

Moreover, on Thursday, it was announced by the Sindh Governor House that it will host an international Biryani Festival every year.

The announcement was made by Sindh Governor Imran Ismail at a lunch gathering organised by the Rice Exporters Association of Pakistan (REAP).

KARACHI: It’s official! The Sindh Governor House will host an international Biryani Festival every year.

This was announced by Governor Imran Ismail at a lunch gathering organised by the Rice Exporters Association of Pakistan (REAP) on Thursday. He said that the government will help increase rice exports to $4 billion.

Currently, rice exports are estimated at $2b, said the governor, adding that the REAP’s members would have to work toward the target.

The governor explained that the incumbent Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf government was giving special weightage to every export commodity in order to increase the foreign exchange coming into the country. “People are right about us being inexperienced in corruption,” he said. “But we want to bring Pakistan out of debt,” he added.

The governor said that rice exporters were one of the largest breadwinners for the country. “Our government gives special importance to your needs,” he told the REAP’s members.

Earlier, former chairperson of REAP, Abdur Rahim Janoo, had addressed the gathering in which he had lamented that rice exports to China had decreased to the current 7,000 tonnes from 30,000 tonnes at one point.

Janoo said that the REAP wanted to organise a Biryani Festival at the Governor’s House. “Rice exports had increased when REAP organised Biryani Festivals in 14 countries,” he said.

Pulao with gosht aur beans ka salan.
Pillau anytime. With youghurt, it's out of this world. Biryani is a third rate Indian invention to eat everyday, get diabetes and loaded stomaches like spare truck tyres that wobble about.

I believe Biryani was an invention in the Mughal soldiers' kitchens.

You will get conflicting answers for this depending on one's own taste and/or region.

My maternal family is from North western Punjab and paternal is from Hazara(KP), none of them ever cooked Biryani at home. It's always been Pulao(yakhni) or at times Kabuli pulao occasionally. But, since I was born and raised in Karachi(Sindh), my mother learned to cook Biryani when I was 9/10 years old. Still till this day we cook pulao once a week with Raita(yogurt topping) while Biryani is hardly once a month. Outside home, restaurants here in Karachi are full of Biryanis. Biryani, biryani everywhere. Biryani is more of a commercial food here for the people who are not from Sindh or south/eastern Punjab.
