A treat from Margalla Hills Islamabad. Can any one post the scientific name of this Margalla hills Queen.

After extensive search the name of above bird is Red-billed Leiothrix hope I am correct. Please quote if you think I am incorrect.

Red-billed Leiothrix is small bird, size of 13cm. It is a regular winter visitor to Margalla Hills, this bird sticks to dense bushes and can be seen in flock, and is recorded up to 2000 meters.

Asian Paradise Flycatcher is a summer visitor to Pakistan, breeds in northern Punjab in forests with good water source in or around it. Also breeds in Margalla Hills, further upwards in Himalayan Valleys up to 1500 meters. The size is 20 cm, except the male which comes with long tail which makes the size around 32cm as shown in the picture.

Red Avadavat

It is found in the open fields and grasslands of Pakistan. It is popular as a cage bird if caught due to the colourful plumage. Found mainly in Punjab.

Blue-capped Rock Thrush

Blue-capped Rock Thrush is gorgeous 17cm summer breeding visitor to Pakistan. It can be seen from Margalla Hills up to 3000 meter mostly with areas covered with Pine trees.

Monal Pheasant

This shiny specimen is found in the Himalayan region of Northern Pakistan. This largish bird is regarded as having the brightest and most colorful plumage in the entire bird kingdom.

That bright plumage bird is called "Surkhaab" in Urdu...

Costs 400£ a pair in UK . Imported from Nepal and India.
But needs large space to be kept as a pet.

Surkhab is a common word for all pheasants types.

This type is Pakistan native not in India

There are other words for pheasants too..such as "Murgh e Zarreen" but i guess Surkhab was only used for this bird an its plumage was used in hats.

Blue throated Barbet

Blue throated Barbet is 23cm resident bird in Murree foothills and Margalla hills.

The term Surkhab is used as common for Pheasant but it is referred to a common type which is widely available in Pakistan and at much lower altitude.

Khalij Pheasant

Another bird from the pheasant family, the Khalij pheasants are also found around the foothills of the Himalayas up North. It is one of the birds on this list that are close to extinction.

Himalayan Griffon Vulture

Himalayan Griffon Vulture is huge bird with wing span up to 3 meters and body size of 110cm. It can be seen in Northern areas, comes down to Murree and Margalla Hills during winters.


Himalayan bulbul

Himalayan bulbul is a 20cm resident bird, most common in forests of Islamabad. It can be seen up to 2100 meters that includes areas like Chitral, Swat and Murree.

Black Francolin
Local Name (Kala Tetar)

Found in the plains of South Punjab, Northern Sindh, Western Balochistan and South KPK, The bird is domesticated because of it's beautiful voice. This bird is a member of Pheasant Family. It like the habitat of grass lands in Pakistan.

Chukar partridge

It is the national Bird of Pakistan.

The habitat in the native range is rocky open hillsides with grass or scattered scrub or cultivation. It is found in Balochistan KPK and foot hills of Himalayas in Gilgit Baldistan. The bird has a beautiful voice and is known for it love for full moon. It will often sing in a full moon night and will sometime try to fly directly in the direction of the moon. Many have been known to die of losing stamina in this flight.

Loons

There are total 5 species of loons 2 are found in Pakistan.

Black-throated loon

This species usually nests on the ground within about 1 metre (3.3 ft) of the lake it breeds at. They can be spotted in Pakistan in the winter season around the small lakes and ponds of Pakistani rivers. The habitat is good for these birds in Pakistan due lack of urban population on rives.
