Bimaru states make India poorer than Pakistan, says World Bank report

Indian's are more concerned with funny maths to prove that they are a supa pawa then actually deal with the issues

Pakistan has always had less real poverty and especially extreme poverty then the likes of india, indians just like deluding themselves and hope the rest of the world dosent notice the shit stains on their white jeans

From my reading on this subject I was surprised with two facts. On the objective international standard of $1.90 Pakistan had far lower % in extreme poverty - you know ribcage sticking out poverty.

But each country also has their own poverty rates. In UK for instance if you don't make $78 a day your are in poverty. In India the government deliberately chose a ridicalously low figure [lower then international standard] to produce false figures making it look like it has less poverty. In Pakistan on the contrary the domestic poverty line has been set higher then international dollar standard giving us higher poverty figure.

Having a artificially low figure might hide the poverty from the outside world - the poor by definition have no voice but it does not help to resolve the issue. On the contrary having the poverty line set higher like in Pakistan causes policymakers to address the problem as opposed to pushing it under the carpet. Examples of this are the $1 billion BISP programme that hands direct cash to the poorest in the country helping the ribcage poor with basics like food etc. This is in fact the first example of the foundations of a welfare state in South Asia.

I completely agree. But sure who cares about India. If they are not worried about their own poor population why would any one else be interested.

Also I think Pakistan does need some drastic measures to further reduce poverty and pull as much people out of it as possible. What Pakistan lacks is industrialization and value addition of services. I am not worried about the loans or low foreign reserves , these are temporary, but massive industry driven employment would be needed in next couple of year or more people will plunge into poverty.

We have reached Mars , if not Pluto .... Mr. Tank

Agreed. Since then you will have reached all the way to Pluto and we will have been buried in Dead Sea. 7 years ago was not 7000 years ago. It was the same India and Pakistan. Unless Modejee waved a abracadra and your now kissing Norway.

Social scientist Devender Kumar said, “India is densely populated than its South Asian neighbouring countries like Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Nepal, Maldives, Bhutan, Pakistan and more. Bangladesh and Pakistan came into existence only after the partition, while others already existed.” Subsequently, the poverty calculation methodology indices will be based on the population of the country and naturally less for those that are low on population.”

Whole bloody nation believe as if they were the rulers of the lands called India before 15th August 1947. These peasants have not been taught that they were the subjects of British raj of India, a colonial entity.

I guess we shouldn't really be surprised at the sheer stupidity in this type of reasoning, seeing as Indian members on this forum follow the same logic when it comes to Pakistan's past.
But according to him Pakistan got a clean slate in 1947. Bangladesh has had two clean slates. India too could eradicate poverty with a minor name change.

From the source quoted by @Nilgri it mentions the new fangled system of measuring poverty that appears to be just a cynical way of figure fudging to hide the scale of ribcage poverty India. Although even by that estimate the numbers are 12.4%. That still leaves India with more ribcage poor then any other country on earth. This is the other side of India that is always ignored while the "big brag" plays out daily.

India still sits in the big boys club.

And I read this. I was seriously gobsmacked at this drivel. The writer of course thinks India existed before 1947. He thinks British India with the Union Jack fluterring was this guys country. He forgets it was a British colony on whose dis-establishment two new dominons came into existence on 14th and 15th August 1947. And even if it were true how does this have a bearing on poverty?

Seriously?

You can take up the issue with the world bank who have vetted and published it (and plan to themselves use the MMRP method globally)

If you want recent estimates here you go:

And if Pakistan is lot better in income poverty, why does it do worse in the multi-poverty index (that was the darling of studies by Pak posters here as long as it referenced Indian data from 2005 compared to Pakistan's 2012 which made Pakistan look lot better on it...... but has been abandoned since India got updated to 2011 and the standings flipped)... and a lot worse on important things like infant mortality? Why doesn't Pakistan make commensurate improvement in Human Development Index as well?

I really wouldn't bring up words like "rib cage", given Pakistan does worse than India in both the global hunger index and global food security index...not to mention what is the point of denigrating malnourished people like that?

We should all strive to do better rather than play this cheap point scoring.

That relates to poor governance/social issues [like have a more conservative culture which militates against female educaton causing the index for education for example to tumble] which as we know is a issue in Pakistan. More later.

Yup my friend, we all have long way to go across the board. Poverty, development etc really boils down to what you mentioned at the start...definition. It is hard to have good enough definitions and then say those definitions are black and white (when really such things are quite continuous and complex) in countries as large as India and Pakistan. We both need to become much more wealthier and productive to really shift things significantly enough.

this is universal truth india is poor .

Its a badly written article that no surprise does not reference the name of the so called report.

21% poverty rate of India is from many years ago (2010/11) I believe under an older way of measuring (URP as opposed to MMRP).

https://www.thehindu.com/news/natio...all-in-indias-poverty-rate/article7727591.ece

(I can provide the world bank report if you want too)

Under better standardised way (MMRP), it was more like 12% that year and has dropped to 5% in recent times for India.

Pakistan has since also dropped to around 2%:

https://worldpoverty.io/

Bangladesh is around 10% and Nepal around 6%.

These are all absolute poverty measures.

Mr. Modi invented a new math to calculate GDP and Poverty rate, if you cant beat it then make it look better

MMRP (poverty rate) has been used by NSSO since late 80s, when BJP had just one or two lok sabha seats in total (forget about Modi).

The GVA methodology was implemented largely under UPA-II govt on the suggestion of IMF SNA2008 system. So nothing to do with Modi again (he just won the election before the new system came to use)

So yeah double epic failure on your part.

. .
hope now Indian establishment accept Pakistan's new govt offer for peace and to eradicate poverty from South Asia.

Hope indians now come out of their dream and open their eyes to see reality which is far from what fairy tales their govt and establishment feeds them 24/7.
