Biggest American Companies to Invest in Sri Lanka

While on his official visit to New York City for the United Nations General Assembly, President Mahinda Rajapaksa met with leading American business leaders at a luncheon to outline emerging opportunities for investment in Sri Lanka.

Business executives from a variety of industries, including the aerospace and defence community, the hospitality and tourism industry, and beverage industry attended the luncheon held at New York City’s Helmsley Hotel.

Executives from the Coca Cola Co, the Boeing Co, Google, Hilton Hotels & Resorts and Starwood Hotels & Resorts were among the nearly 100 Business leaders, analysts, representatives of Chambers of Commerce and industry present.

Amidst his busy schedule President Rajapaksa mingled with the American Business leaders meeting and greeting each person individually and requesting them to focus new interest in Sri Lanka as an investment opportunity.

Members of the US business community shared the view of a key representative of the pharmaceutical industry giant Pfizer Inc., that this forum has the potential to grow into a US-Sri Lanka business council to bring together companies and government.

“Companies like Pfizer want to invest in emerging markets like Sri Lanka,” the Pfizer representative said, noting that the business luncheon allowed corporate executives to meet government officials and Sri Lankan business leaders.

“It is a great way to start a dialogue,” he said. External Affairs Minister Prof G L Peiris in his keynote address said Sri Lanka boasts an economy with strong fundamentals and a market poised for continued growth and international investment.

Noting the nation’s promising economic future, Prof Peiris said “Sri Lanka is today, without any exaggeration, one of the world’s best destinations for investment. We are on the threshold of an economic renaissance in Sri Lanka.”

U.S. Chamber of Commerce Asia Department Executive Director Esperanza Gomez Jelalian noted the Chamber’s support for Sri Lanka.

Sri Lanks has potential far ahead of India and Pakistan combined due to peaceful isolated nature.

but if srilanka was progressing in technologies and economy like the hot air blowing from few days now, like china rail and now american boeing companies coming than srilanka should have been in hell of a news nowadays

but we just keep hearing from srilankan..

i have no intention of ill will but i am just very surprised on exaggerated news..

.
The thread title itself is misleading. There's a difference between willing to invest and investing.

I wish the country all the luck. It has seen peaceful times after a long and arduous journey. But a word of advice for Sri Lankan here, please dont exaggerate and mislead.

.
srilankan u dream too much dont you think???

I think the British told the American Colonists the same thing. Look where USA ended up ;)

As long as you are dreaming something positive, and work towards that dream, there is no reason for anything to stop you. If u don't dream, u won't achieve ;)

Rising Sri Lanka

Good news. But most of these companies are looking forward to Srilankan domestic market for instance Pfizer and Coca Cola. Not sure about the Boeing, I dont think Srilanka has the skilled man power to work in Aerospace industry. Boeing probably want to sell some aircraf.
Again Pfizer, Coca-cola alread have presence in Pakistan, India and Bangladesh and they are not a good employment maker rather a profit maker. We in Bangladesh sent Pfizer back to where it came from. They closed the factory down 25 years ago.;)

Sri Lanka certainly has a lot less red tape for business companies to deal with as compared with India. Sri Lanka's going to be much more ahead in per capita income than India for decades to come, thanks to a much more manageable population.
