Bharat Dynamics Ltd. to take on a bigger role - NATIONAL - The Hindu

Bharat Dynamics Limited, the lead integrator for the Army version of the Akash weapon system, is in an expansion mode and seeking to become main integrator of several more missiles, apart from co-developing some of them with the Defence Research and Development Organisation.

As a lead integrator, BDL not only manufactures Akash surface-to-air missiles, but also supplies radars, ground supports systems and vehicles to the user.

With a Rs. 14,000-crore order placed by the Army for Akash missiles, BDL has added two more production lines to the existing one here. The company’s turnover, which was Rs.1,000 crore in 2012-13, is expected to touch Rs. 4,000 crore this year, while it was Rs. 2,800 crore in 2014-15.

Talking to The Hindu here on Monday, BDL’s Director (Technical), Air Vice Marshal (retired), N. B. Singh, said: “The next five years are going to be phenomenal.”

In addition to the existing three manufacturing units at Hyderabad, Bhanur (in Medak district, Telangana) and Visakhapatnam, BDL is establishing two more units—at Ibrahimpatnam near here on a 633-acre site and at Amaravati (Maharashtra) in another 580 acres. Besides these two units, BDL would be soon acquiring a sick unit involved in manufacturing of explosives in Tamil Nadu.

The facility at Ibrahimpatnam would basically manufacture MR-SAMs (medium range surface-to- air missiles) and LR-SAMs (long range surface-to-air missiles), being developed by DRDO in collaboration with Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI). The upcoming unit at Maharashtra would cater to making very short air defence system-(V-SHORAD).

Recently, BDL successfully test-fired its first-ever designed and developed second generation anti-tank guided missile, Amogha-1, which has a range of 2.8 km. BDL was planning to equip it with an Infra-red (IR) seeker and make it more “contemporary,” Mr. Singh said.

He said the design has been completed for another new missile-- a land attack missile, which could use different types of warheads, for a range of eight km. It would be basically a bunker-destroying missile and could also be used for attacking tanks. The missile would be ready in three years, he added.

This bit is encouraging.

If one goes by past records then that's at least still 6 years away from induction that too iff in those years it doesn't get altogether scrapped in favour of some phoren maal.

Between good to see BDL setting up additional production lines .Make in India being realised.
