2 smugglers die in Joypurhat BGB firing

Two smugglers were killed as members of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB), after being attacked, opened fire on them in Panchbibi frontier of Joypurhat district early Wednesday.
No BGB members were injured in the attack, reported our Bogra correspondent quoting Lt Colonel Khasru Sabbir Ali, commander of Jaipurhat-3 BGB.
The deceased were identified as Rana Mia, 22, son of Bahadur Mia and Shahidul Islam, 22, son of Rois Uddin in Ratanpur-Boidyanathpur area of the upazila, reported our Dinajpur correspondent.
The border troops came under attack at Koya frontier, nearly 2.5 kilometer inside the zeroline, of the upazila around 2:00am, said the BGB commander.
Earlier around 1:30am, the on-duty BGB men chased a group of nearly 10-12 smugglers when they entered Bangladesh territory with phensidyl.
Facing resistance, the smugglers ran away with the phensidyl, the BGB commander added.
Around 30 minutes after, nearly 100 smugglers united and attacked the border guards with sharp weapons and sticks, forcing the law enforcers to open fire.
At one stage of firing, two members of the gang sustained bullet injuries while others managed to flee the scene, the Lt Col said.
The injured were rushed to Joypurhat Modern Hospital where they succumbed to their injuries within a span of four hours, he added.
The BGB members fired 12 rounds of bullets during the incident, he said.
