Home to 11 million people, Cuba is the largest and most populous Caribbean island nation. Despite continued, crippling sanctions aimed at marginalizing ordinary Cubans and inflicting collective punishment on a peoples, Cuba proudly boasts a 99.8% literacy rate. A country that has taken great strides becoming the only nation on earth to meet WWFs definition of sustainable development, Cuba has also managed to build a universal healthcare system, which is the envy of many a developed nation. Boasting the highest doctor to patient ratio in the world, Cuba also enjoys one of the lowest infant-mortality rates. However, continuing embargo does mean that there are severe shortages of medical equipment and drugs, which is an unjust and unsubstantiated collective punishment of the Cuban people, denying them their natural right to life.
