Did you know American F-16 pilot Scott O Grady (who was actually shot down over Bosnia) sued the makers of this movie. He claimed the movie was based on the events surrounding his shooting down and rescue

The scene is entertaining, but factually unsound. The rocket motor of SAM only fires for about 5 to 15 seconds, and the rest is reliant on kinetic momentum to steer towards the target. No way would a missile track the F-18 with its motor on for 2 minutes. In reality, that SAM would have bled off its energy within the first 30 seconds.

Yeah in reality it would have accelerated to very high speed, and then after burning out losing its kinetic energy until it runs out of energy and falls to the ground. In this movie it was always flying at approximately the same speed as the F-18...

If it were showed to behave like a real missile it would have been no fun would it ?

Argh - I hate it when missiles chase airplanes around like a dog would chase a rabbit. The missile would have gone stupid after the first pass on the jet.
