Development of the Beretta APX began in around 2012. Pre-production prototype was first publicly revealed in 2015. This new pistol was specially designed for military applications. It is aimed at a possible US Army requirement to replace the M9, as well as other export customers. Beretta also develops versions of the APX pistol for law enforcement and commercial markets.

The Beretta APX has a new design. It is not based on previous Beretta's military or law enforcement pistols. The APX was designed as a multi-caliber weapon. Caliber conversions are performed simply changing barrels, slides and magazines. The first configuration will be chambered in 9x19 mm and .40 S&W. There is also a model planned, chambered for 9x21 mm IMI ammunition.

The APX is a striker-fired pistol with a double-action only trigger. It uses a modified Browning locking system. A trigger pack is standard across the range of APX pistols. So the same trigger pack is easily moved between different sized frames to make full-size or compact pistols. In similar way the SIG Sauer P320 works.

This pistol has a polymer frame. There are three sizes of removable backstraps. The trigger guard opening is large enough for use with winter gloves. Magazine release button is reversible. Slide hold and release buttons are also ambidextrous.

The Beretta APX has no manual safeties. There is only a Glock-style trigger safety. However it has been reported that in the future manual safety will be available as an option.

Manufacturer claims that the APX pistol has a service life of 45 000 rounds with 5 000 rounds between stoppages. That's an impressive claim, especially for a newly designed pistol.

Magazines of the Beretta APX pistol are not compatible with those of the M9. A full-size APX chambered for 9x19 mm ammunition uses 17-round double-stack magazines, while the .40 S&W model uses 15-round magazines.

The Beretta APX comes with a military standard Picatinny-type pistol rail. It accepts all standard tactical accessories, such as flashlights and laser pointers.

This pistol comes with a low-profile 3-dot combat sights. Both front and rear sights are adjustable for windage.
