Beijing: We could have kicked out nations illegally occupying S. China Sea islands
Published time: 17 Nov, 2015 10:52Edited time: 18 Nov, 2015 19:13

China could have used force to expel nations illegally occupying its islands in the South China Sea, but instead is showing restraint, a top Chinese diplomat has said about the vexed territorial dispute.

Vice Foreign Minister Liu Zhenmin was speaking about the Spratly Islands, an archipelago where overlapping claims by China, Vietnam, the Philippines, Malaysia, Taiwan and Brunei are increasingly creating tensions.

"The Chinese government has the right and the ability to recover the islands and reefs illegally occupied by neighboring countries," Liu said Tuesday in Beijing, without naming any particular country.

"But we haven't done this. We have maintained great restraint with the aim to preserve peace and stability in the South China Sea," he added.

Of the five nations involved in the territorial disputes, only Brunei has no military fortifications on the Spratly islands.

Oh my.. That's a not-so-subtle statement. Once the US pivot back to ME,China will no doubt make an advancement in SCS. We will bitchslap Manila to submission..Hanoi too,if the viets misbehave again.

go ahead we still waiting for that nuke one of you guys promise

The last sentence reveals why the no name government official says China refrains from using force: only Brunei has no fortifications. Obviously the PLA wants to use warships and aircraft against unarmed neighbors to secure a victory. What a coward!

At times I feel China is way too much benign.

China could have gone all-Mahan in the SCS and ECS.

But, let's better continue to build capability for a few more years and then see.

Asia would be fortunate if Mao still lives and in control of China. But not it is what you think...

If China is still under Mao, the PLAN would still be nothing more than a coast guard of a navy. In fact, calling the Mao PLAN a 'navy' would be generous. Calling the Mao PLAN a 'navy' would be out of minimum level of diplomatic respect for a fellow UN member, not because the Mao PLAN is any real navy in the military sense.

If not Mao himself but a leader 'like Mao' ? Probably would still be the same as if it was Mao himself. A leader 'like Mao' would still be as shortsighted because he is 'like Mao'. What else can he be ? That has been the behavioral trend in communist dictatorships -- be like the guy before. Mao himself or a leader 'like Mao' would have periodic purges of the country to ensure Communist Party supremacy. Mao himself did it several times, large scale and small, and there is no reasons why any leader 'like Mao' should deviate, thereby ensuring that farsighted reformers like Deng Xiaoping would never emerge and steer China on the path we see today.

So yes, it is too bad for Asia that Mao or a leader 'like Mao' is not in charge of China after the spectacular collapse of the Soviet Union. Instead of China being the economic powerhouse of Asia, there could -- not necessarily would -- be several smaller economic powers leading Asia, like Japan and South Korea, and leaving China behind.

Bro, I know chinese history there's no need to lecture me. What you're referring to was the cultural revolution. There's more to it than just Mao want to consolidate power, etc. But i will not discuss it here.

Again, your arguments on development are always based on ideology. Japan and South Korea being pets of US have special privileges. I've been arguing the Vietcong should open up to the US, better yet become a democracy, allow US bases in Cam Ran Bay--then become a power house like South Korea. Though your Vietnamese countrymen would disagree with you
