Great victory for Su today!

Such disappointment from the Japan women team pursuit, falling in the last minute, I guess the pressure got into them, oh well.

What’s in a name?

Just as Chinese fans call actor Timothee Chalamet “Sweet Tea” and singer Katy Perry “Fruit Sister”, they have nicknames for Olympic athletes.

So don’t be baffled when Eileen Gu is being referred to as “Frog Princess” – that’s her nickname she gave herself during her training days. Since she was nine, she had worn a green helmet with frog eyes painted on the front and a small crown ornament on the top.

Chinese-American figure skater Nathan Chen is known as “the third Chen” because there are two other older figure skaters familiar to Chinese fans who are surnamed “Chen”.

American skaters Nathan Chen and Karen Chen.

American skaters Nathan Chen and Karen Chen.

One is Canada’s Patrick Chan, who won gold in the team event at the 2018 Pyeongchang Games. The other is American Tiffany Chin, who won bronze in the ladies’ singles category in the 1985 and 1986 world championships.

“Chen”, “Chan” and “Chin” are romanisations of the same Chinese surname. So in this “family”, Nathan is the third-oldest sibling. And as a matter of course, American figure skater Karen Chen is also known as “fourth sister Chen”.

Japanese star Yuzuru Hanyu is called “youzi”, which is Mandarin for pomelo. “Youzi” comes from the first two syllables of his given name, “yuzu”. Yuzu is also the name of a small orange citrus fruit in Japanese.

While the western media is accusing Chinese fans of calling Nathan Chen traitor.
