Yes, you are right. Probably I cannot compare them with rickshaw pullers in (not India) West Bengal. I am specifically pointing towards the fact that it is one of the many such professions, which happen to be a specific characteristic of a region. Umm.. say, jewel miners in Srilanka ? Can we compare them with de beers ? I don't think so. It's silly. It's equally silly to try to use rickshaw to score some 'poverty points', just because Pakistan banned then in 1949. Get the context, in which the user is posting all that.

Am I wrong but it seems like for the first time since the Indian Independence movement large numbers of ordinary people Are getting involved in civic life. Especially young people. They seem to be everywhere, cleaning cities, reporting bribes, insisting that potholes get fixed, shouting at the media, making videos on net neutrality and songs about non performing politicians.

So much energy thrown at fixing the country, something is going to change. Last time we saw this much emotion and activity The British got thrown out.

Fair point. Frankly non of us are going to be able to change "ground realities" here in cyberspace. I come here. Use the Indian's to release some angst built up over a difficult working day, have a chuckle while munching my chicken laden Sub and thats about it. No harm done. For me this is Japanese version of Manga. A cathartic release. As a bonus maybe I hope I might make some of my own people open up to new ideas. That's about it.

But I will say this. Sri Lanka is the only country in South Asia that even comes remotely close to gaining any respect. The situation on the ground on average street, on average day in average community is way above any India and sadly even Pakistan can show.

Most of the bluster and dazzle you see on these forums is just fruits of being large.

I mean they make fun of "failed" Pakistan but we got rid of it in 1949 and even then if you read the article "Pakistan was on the western fringe of the Rickshaw zone". After 1947 and large scale migration into Karachi this practice was introduced but with two years was made illegal for being "inhuman. So top find out that in 2015 India has 2 million people tethered to rickshaws came as a surprise in particular after being incessantly reminded of "Mars India".

My sincere suggestion. If you really want to judge people, please do it with utmost sincerity. The people that you are laughing at, or making fun of, are not really enjoying it either. It's the way the situations are and believe me when I say this, if things could have changed and done overnight, probably someone would have done that already. no one spoke about "failed" state... see in pakistan to you have few good performing states and bad performing states same does we have in india....
"mars india" is a different issue... when a child goes to school, teachers and parents to motivate them praise their good marks, handwriting, other skills to motivate them..its normal.. thats optimism. more like positive reinforcement.... you see if you continuously focus on negativity of your society then definitely you will loose hope in it.. and no success will come from it....
