Bangladesh’s roads are among the worst in Asia, DataLeads say in a recent infograph published based on an opinion survey of the World Economic Forum.

It ranked at 113 among the Asian countries for road quality, only ahead of Nepal, ranked worst for lack of resources and hilly terrain posing a major barrier to development.

Singapore is ranked at the top in Asia and second globally in terms of road infrastructure in the country. It is followed by Japan and Taiwan which have equally well-maintained roads ranked 5 and 11 respectively. South Korea and Malaysia ranked 14 and 20 respectively also figure in the countries with best roads in Asia.

China is ranked 39 in the world. It has good roads owing to the rising economy and growing development. China has the longest highway in the world stretching 85,000 kilo metres. Brunei and Sri Lanka rank better than other south Asian countries. The condition of Indian roads is getting better with the country ranked 51, ahead of Thailand and Pakistan at 60 and 77 respectively.

Bhutan ranked 80 needs to develop the road infrastructure by leaps and bounds. It is followed by Vietnam and Laos that have also not invested much in developing road infrastructure to make travelling easy around the country.

Cambodia ranked 93 has sporadic road development in both rural and urban areas. Philippines’ roads are less developed compared to other East Asian countries. It is followed by Mongolia at 109 and Bangladesh at 113. Nepal has the worst road in Asia.

There are few dual carriage way highway but no access controlled highway or express way. Few are being built yet long way to go.
BD certainly is the worst when it comes to road.

Technically, only the NH1 or Dhaka-Chittagong highway would qualify as a proper highway.

It's rather a miracle that we are one of the fastest growing economy in the world despite having one of the worst infrastructure.

Once the mega-projects are complete, we might be witnessing a GDP growth of over 10% on a regular basis.

Bangladesh is an export oriented Economy. If its industries run at a 100% rate, it'll be the peak economic growth that's achievable. But if the infrastructure is improved, the economic growth can be manifolds despite the industrial output at max.

No surprises, Except maybe roads in Thailand from my experience are probably better than in India

Inner city roads in Sri Lanka are horrendous but Intercity highways and expressways or even the rural road system are pretty good

Why is anyone suprised banglerdash is the worst country in Asia (lowest HDI, poorest, LDC, low education rate, no proper university) so obviously they would have the worst roads!

@Nilgiri

True.

But they have the most Potential. We knew that. But India just had to poke their nose in 71

I am having difficulty with the revelation that India has better road infrastructure than Thailand.Unlike Thailand, India has a huge regional gulf of development among the region.May be this survey focused mainly in some place of better infrastructure like Delhi, Maharastra or southern India.

having huge land mass is no excuse for bad infra, just as they wouldn't say their GDP is higher than bangladesh because we have lot more people otherwise we are just as poor or even worst

Nepal is in Asia, but probably they are within the margin of error with BD :P

Yes obviously you have a problem with a great many things regarding India. Keep crying.

Oh look you are already suggesting why and how it has to fit your stupid perception.

Here's a brainwave: focus on becoming less of a quack, so fewer BD's have to flee to India for basic X-rays and medicines and treatments ok?....so that BD can keep more of its hard earned money to improve your crap infra.

Thailand did a huge amount of rural road infra expansion in the 80s continuing into the 90s. Right now the budgeting/prioritisation is more oriented to the high frequency routes and there is much urbanisation that has happened in the interim so the rural less used ones are left to atrophy somewhat. Anyway thats what my Thai friend told me a year or so ago.

India in comparison is much more recent program of rural road construction/improvement and is in earlier level of urbanisation so there is much more organic demand right now to keep the roads in those areas better.....like voting result wise etc.

The "sweet spot" where all roads are really good etc, generally comes at later point past Thailands current economic stage...where rural incomes are both quite higher and also there is enough fiscal inertia to keep road construction/maintenance going past the best "ROI" routes.
