What the hell is happening. We have the largest number of troops in UN peace keeping. Our army is contributing in the nation's development. But our military expenditures is so poor.

Most of the equipments we buy are from loans provided by the countries we are buying from. The loans are not shown in the national budget. So we spend more than what the budget shows. The budget is mainly for maintenance of our military structure. We could use a bigger military budget but right now we have to concentrate on infrastructure building and the Army knows it and helps to build our infrastructure.

So poor!! General people doesn't even recognize the need of a military force in Bangladesh. Though its poor, if you could make sure that the ministers do not take a large piece of that 1.8%, you could build Bangladesh Military very strong. Almost one third of the 1.8% goes to the ministers pocket every year.

Patience is virtue! Just look at the bright side. Even after having such a small expenditure compared to our neighbors, we are beefing up our defence force on a continuous basis.

A country of the size like Bangladesh does not require an extremely huge military. All we need is to maintain a formidable amount with good equipments. Our major focus has always been professionalism and strong training.

Quality beats quantity any day my friend. Trust me!

Cheers!!!

You need to reserve your strength for your rainy day, on a shiny day you have to feel the need. I'm currently heavily worried about the ITLOS hearing with india on our maritime border. I believe india will not abide by the judgement if it goes against its interest. Now if we had one strategic force, some attack submarines, I wouldn't be worried then because our forces could go for its right operation.

Well that is one way of seeing it. I can any day arguing against any change in balance at BoB. Even having few subs will not bother India as they have equal and even better counter-measures for it. So if they have to overlook decisions taken against them, they can do it with all might. Dont get me wrong..am just being a stern devil's advocate here.

Having said that, subs are definitely required to get some deterrence against our neighbors. Its high time we make a move for it.

Cheers!!!

The military expenditure of a country is proportionate to the external threads it faces

Here's a document supporting my position. This is the list of expenditures on 2013-2014.Here's what the note on the top says'excluding loans & advances, domestic & foreign debt, food account operations and structural adjustment'.

Defence expenditure can be found on page 26.

The link does not come out at all in my computer. Please check if the document is too heavy, you can edit and shorten it. But, your opinion about 'loans and advances, domestic & foreign debt-------' is very correct.

The budget includes expenses for wages, army fatigues, boots, building/maintenance of barracks, training exercises, transport, fuels and many other things like these. It may also include procurement of non-miltary type of goods.

As far as I know, military imports are categorized in the books as imports of machines in the foreign trade category. Military weapons are certainly machines.

When you have deterrent force, no will come to show might on your land. I didn't say about going in war with any, I said about establishing right on your own legal boundary which a deterrent force can protect against any mighty force. BTW, counting all friends india got in its neighborhood it seems to me it's not a mighty nation rather I'd say vulnerable....just need eyes to see that :).

:cuckoo: We even do not think about bangladesh while preparing our defence strategy..

. . .
regarding submarines as a deterrent......

a deterrent is something that doesn't always ensure a victory in case of war, especially for a small country like us..... but the opponent will think twice - 'if we start a war, how much attrition would be there and would we be able to swallow that attrition militarily and politically?'..... winning a battle at the expense of losing nothing and winning at the expense of losing a few valuable warships (with several hundred sailor with it) is a huge difference.... it will have far-reaching political consequences.... and that political uncertainty is enough of a deterrent...... such a deterrent can be provided by several able submarines in case of any naval confrontation....
