New York, Nov 23 (bdnews24.com) — Expatriate Bangladeshis will remit home $14 billion in the current fiscal, which will be $2 billion higher than the previous year, according to the World Bank.

The latest issue of the Bank's Migration and Development Brief, released in Washington on Wednesday, said expatriates across the world would send home a total of $534 billion in 2012.

It added that remittance flow to the developing world is expected to exceed $406 billion this year, an increase of 6.5 percent over the previous year.

Hans Timmer, Director of the bank's Development Prospects Group, said in a statement, "Although migrant workers are, to a large extent, adversely affected by the slow growth in the global economy, remittance volumes have remained remarkably resilient, providing a vital lifeline to not only poor families but a steady and reliable source of foreign currency in many poor remittance recipient countries."

The global lender estimates India will top the list of remittance receivers as its expatriates will remit over $70 billion in 2012, followed by China ($66 billion), the Philippines and Mexico ($24 billion each) and Nigeria ($21 billion).

If the World Bank's brief forecast proves to be correct, Pakistani expatriates will remit home the same amount of money as Bangladeshis this year.

Other large recipients include Nigeria, Egypt, Vietnam and Lebanon, according to the Brief.

Last year, Bangladesh stood eighth in the list. As per Bangladesh Bank data, expatriates had remitted more than $12.16 billion in the last financial year, which was around $1.16 higher than the previous year.

According to estimates, remittances to developing countries will grow by 7.9 percent in 2013, 10.1 percent in 2014 and 10.7 percent in 2015 to reach $534 billion in 2015.

Yes you are right but now Bangladesh is now looking for earning from skilled workers more. Nurse export to Europe and North America is a top priority. There is a huge shortage of nurses and they earn a big amount of salary. Philippines earns most of their remit money through nurses. In addition to that Bangladesh is trying to look at the market of eastern Europe, Russia, western Europe, Canada, new Zealand, Australia where there is a shortage of workers and never explored before.

I am curious to know how much money comes through hundi or illegal channel in Bangladesh. world bank put the amount 40% though Bangladesh Bank had put 18-24% which world bank termed as image repairing measure though real amount is much higher. Couple of month back prothom alo news paper ran an article and indicated that the total amount including hundi could be 20-25 billion usd and asked government to assess the affect of it.

If anyone has any info on it.. And you can share it that will be highly appreciated.

1.The figure would have been double if the current BAL govt hadn't become unpopular in ME because of their pro-India policies which tend to become anti-Muslim bloc. Even Malaysian embargo has not been lifted in spite of claims otherwise. There have been numerous reports of graft involving BAL high-ups and bureaucratic screw-up which GOB has failed to address.

2. The great thing is: BD economy continues to gallop in spite of the govt.

It is the AL government, because of that BD is progressing. Install any Religious government, then you will see result like Pakistan.

This really is where Indians make mistake. There is virtually no actual policy difference between BAL and BNP and Jaamat. All of them are middle of the road. Bangladesh since its birth has had goal..... Develop economically as quickly as possible. There is an universal consensus on that.

Regarding India and Pakistan relationship there are simply grandstanding for the masses. Bangladesh will never directly or clandestinely take any action against Indian sovereignty unless it is threatened first. With Pakistan The divorce happened many years ago and has been replaced with detached disinterest.

In bangladesh our greatest obstacle to development is our politicians. Bangladesh economy is where it is by the sheer hard work of the people of Bangladesh inspite of its politicians that includes BAL, BNP, JP or JI.

Bangladesh needs to optimise expatriate/diaspora revenue by providing business funds, start up loans for Bangladeshis overseas. I know the government has worked on such ideas in the past.

Bangladeshi growth is powered by certain key businessmen and takes place despite of (not because of) either of the two parties in power, though the Awami League is worse in some ways e.g. crime.

Once infrastructure and power are sorted than Bangladesh can realize its target of double digit growth and catch up with Indonesia which is now an emerging economic power but was once behind Bangladesh.
