Dhaka, Nov 30 (bdnews24.com) — People in Bangladesh are more passionate and enthusiastic about Rabindranath Tagore than their counterparts across the border in West Bengal, according to renowned Indian actor Soumitra Chatterjee.

The actor, who performed a play on Tagore, his life and his times, said, "This is not my first visit in Dhaka, and I am thrilled by the way Bangladeshis welcome me every time I come."

On people's passion here toward Tagore's works, he said, "It is doubtful whether the people of West Bengal have the same feelings and enthusiasm about the great poet. You (Bangladeshis) are keeping Tagore alive in the whole nation's heart by cultivating Rabindranath in your mind.

"I will come to Bangladesh whenever you call me; I feel good about working here."

Soumitra and fellow Indian actor Sharmila Tagore took part in a play on Tagore's life and his works as part of the Nobel laureate's 150th birth anniversary joint celebration by Kolkata and Dhaka.

Asked about her take on Tagore's popularity in Bangladesh, Sharmila said, "I am in Dhaka for the first time but I can feel the warmth of your grand welcome and enormous response, as also your huge passion for Rabindranath Tagore."

The tale 'Life Unending' was staged on Monday at Radisson Water Garden Hotel's grand ballroom starring Soumitra Chatterjee, Sharmila Tagore and Jagannath Guho.

Soumitra, who has also directed the play, based it on a story on Tagore's life and his literary works, and then dramatised the tale.

Both Soumitra and Sharmila are well known for their performances over the years in plays, open-air theatres and drama-serials. Both made their first appearances in Satyajit Ray's film 'Apur Sansar' (The World of Apu).

Indeed I have noticed that he is highly revered in Bangladesh's art and literature.

A few months back, I went to a meeting with a wealthy private bank. After that, they gifted us (my whole team) with rare posters of Tagore's art and poetry.

Blame the tagore loving munafiq Islamic name mushriks!

I totally agree and recently one went to hell :) although the munafiq chose to buried in Islamic way even though the bigot oppose Islam all of his pathetic life. :disagree:

^^ lol that was funny. That man while alive compared Adhan with the call of prostitutes and was an renowned atheist .... But before dying he told others to offer him Janaja and bury in public muslim graveyard and forbade to take his body to Shahid Minar. I laughted a lot when i saw his body is covered with a cloth on which LA ILAHA ILLALLAHU MOHAMMADUR RASULULLAH is written..... Hahaha. Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) told us not to attend Janaja of such people..... :-)

So now you know why I despise these low life munafiq Bengali intellectual. I have no problem if some one become atheist or mushrik but why is this double standard practice? Bigot like him used their Islamic name to trick people while alive, but when they died then they all sudden become Muslim. He think he will get free ticket to Jannat but I don't think so. If I was in state power, there wouldn't be any Janaza for those kid of people.

I hope people will learn to disposed these kind of people.

This is not true at all . In Bangladesh secular & atheist are very small in number . But they are controlling whole media by foreign aids & acting against mainstream Muslim Bangladeshis . These atheist are dancing with Rabindranath though Robindronaht himself was not an atheist . Some of these obnoxious forces are advocating that Tipaimuk Barrage is not harmful for Bangladesh , so these are known as Indian agents or in simple bangla 'Dalal' .

Everyone fears death and hopes for the possibility of an afterlife when the "moment" arrives. =)

Reminds me of Oppenheimer.

The Jewish scientist Oppenheimer was such a hedonist all his life and used to make fun of anything remotely religious at every possible chance.

Before succumbing to death from cancer, he wanted his friends to get a Christian priest (why christian?) visit his hospital room. Everyone was dumbfounded.

I dont know what your prophet told you, i dont know whom you are talking about, but my conscience tells me to respect people when they are dead and fulfill their last wish.

May be he was not an atheist, may be his grasp of Islam was better than you, who are you to judge? Among all you Bangladeshi, I've noticed Iajduni to be most learned about Islam and history of Islam, hard to be believe considering the perpetual rah rahing of some members.

Dear..whatever it is but they (Secularists, Atheists) are the other wings of the same Bird you are part of as well on your side, Just like extremists in Pakistan serving their purpose at our end. Both are marginal support in ordinary public but possess an overwhelming cloud upon the policymaker’s bcz they are allowed to do so under the patronage of very establishment which rules us no matter what political party are in office at any moment, they used to safeguard against sudden revolution, change, anarchy, wars.

Ordinary people are emotional, with noble conscious they can turnaround at anytime whenever finds crude logic and rational. These kinds of groups are used to control people’s emotions, conscious, logic and rational at the same time forever.

To defeat these kinds of groups, public needs to aware the lollypops they are licking in the process, at least lowers it its blind addiction in order to reach a decision of their own i.e. Islam in case of Pakistan, Bengali Nationalism in Case of Bangladesh.

The problem is both these way of life are mashed up purposefully by the very establishment around their bodies in our respective countries, so that whosoever want to stand against them, want to change the status-quo, think about revolution they should know they are standing against their lollypops, their way of life.

To differentiate, separate our way of life and our tormentor’s interests is the real job to do for the public indeed, only after that we could calls ourselves freed.

Maybe Iajdani knows Islam better than me, but Not you!! You should be the last man to criticize.. Well then wait for iajdani .... What he thinks about my post! Should i speak good about Hitler as he is dead?? Why would i speak good of someone who used to attack my religion?????

It's not about Islam and iajduni, I was giving an example. Let me give you an analogy.

Say I believe in an religion which says tagore is our prophet. It's against Islamic tenets according to which prophet Mohammed was the last prophet. Now should I start disrespecting Islamic figures just because what the said was contrary to my believe! If god forbid something happens to al zakir tomorrow, should I express joy in a thread mourning him cause he goes around bad mouthing tagore all the time!?

See you are commenting in a multi religious and multi ethnic community, so even if you are staying true to your religion (or whatever interpretation of that which you believe), there is still plenty of roomvfor non religious folks like me to criticise you and your believe, atleat till fatwa is illegal in republic of India.

^ i was not glad at Kabir Chowdhury's death. I just said its funny that all his life he preached against an ideology but then embraced it before death......
