With the rise of Islamic fundamentalism in Bangladesh and government's crackdown on the Islamist parties things seem to be getting worse by the day. The latest victim of growing violence in India's eastern neighbour is a lawmaker from Bangladesh's ruling party, who was shot dead by masked men, police said.

Manzurul Islam Liton, a national legislator from PM Sheikh Hasina's Awami League party, was shot at his home in Gaibandha district on Saturday evening, said local police chief Atiar Rahman.

Family members told police that four masked men arrived on motorcycles, entered the house and shot Liton at close range before running away , Rahman said.

He was declared dead by doctors at a local hospital. Liton had been vocal against religious extremism in Bangladesh. Obaidul Quader, an Awami League general secretary, told reporters that the attack on Liton was "a planned murder" and appeared to be a "cowardly act of the sectarian forces."

"The state will make sure that religious extremists will pay a high price for this crime,'' Quader said.

Bangladesh has been experiencing threats in recent years from Islamist militants possibly inspired by the Islamic State terror group. Dozens of atheist and secular bloggers, writers, publishers, members of religious minority groups and foreigners have been attacked and killed in the impoverished South Asian nation in recent years.

He died due to rivalry inside local polical politics nothing related to Islamist or fundamentalist . This becoming a norm in our ruling party whanever any of thewir leader killed by any means the wil try to blam on Jamat or BNP . so if any of their leader or loyal media, administration tells anything you need to take it with a pinch of salt.

This man is most probably shot because of power politics by rival politicians. There is no islamic terrorism in Bangladesh.

True if he was really a good politician or killed by ''militants'' we would seen political storm in Bangladesh.

Too many terrorists in Bangladesh these days, India needs to act quick to build a wall, so it doesnt spread more into India

Pointless thread to malign BD's image to portray it as Islamist terrorist hotbed. He was killed most probably by rival Awami League leaders. Awami League is involved in 90% terrorist activities in BD. So you can safely assume most of the cases both victims and criminals are Awami. Awami league needs to clean its internal cancer by hidden action. This MP shot a road side children by his own gun, its known that he was ruthless in his place but not updated about his late crime profile. Some days back 3 Jubo League men was silently killed in Dinajpur, family members accused RAB example of internal doings.

Your border with Bangladesh is more armed than your border with us is, if that's not enough nothing will be.
