Toronto, Aug 17 (bdnews24.com) A Bangladeshi-born religious leader has been charged with a number of sexual offences against his students in Canada.
Mohammad Masroor, 48, was arrested on Aug 10 -- following three weeks of police investigation -- in a case involving sexual abuse of five people, both male and female. Masroor, believed to have travelled extensively around the world, faces 13 charges. The charges deal with sex-related offences as also those relating to giving death threats.
A detective personnel Karen Armstrong at a press conference on Wednesday said Masroor, who leads the prayers at Baitul Mukarram Islamic Society mosque, had abused his position of authority when he taught Quran to students there and at private homes in Toronto.
He has been living in Canada since 2008.
Armstrong said apart from Bangladesh, Masroor also worked and lived in France, Germany, Hungary, Singapore, Sri Lanka and most recently in Florida and Michigan in the United States.
"He is one man but may have left a trail of victims worldwide."
"We are appealing to the public to help us find other victims," Armstrong said.
Masroor was a person of trust and a community leader which made him very powerful indeed. As an imam, his reach among young and vulnerable people within the community was high, he added.
