Religious and ethnic minority leaders in Bangladesh have called on the ruling Awami League government to fulfill its pre-election promises by forming a special commission and making laws to ensure justice and rights for minorities. Before the national election on Dec. 30 last year, the Awami League (AL) said in its election manifesto that a “National Minority Commission will be formed, and special laws will be enacted for the effective protection of the rights of the minority.”

Since then AL leadership have been silent on the issue, testing the patience of religious and ethnic minority leaders. “A minority commission and special protection law are absolutely essential because existing laws of the land are failing to ensure justice and rights for minority communities,” Sajeeb Drong, an ethnic Garo Catholic and secretary of the Bangladesh Adivasi Forum, told ucanews.com. In the absence of a functional commission and law, which exist in neighboring India, minorities continue to face various forms of violence and injustice with impunity, he said. Drong was speaking to ucanews.com at a June 23 press event in Dhaka organized by the Bangladeshi Hindu Buddhist Christian Unity Council, the largest minorities rights forum in Muslim-majority Bangladesh. The council’s secretary advocate Rana Dasgupta, a Hindu, said that despite the country being a secular state constitutionally, the reality is there has been an increase in abuse and discrimination against minority communities. The council released a report in May that showed a rise in violence against Bangladeshi minorities during the first quarter of this year. The report said there were 250 incidents including 23 murders.

There were 806 incidents of violence against minorities in 2018 including 104 forced conversions and 29 attacks on places of worship used by minorities. In 2017, there were 1,004 cases of violence against minorities. The number was 1,471 in 2016.

Supreme Court lawyer Govinda Chnadra Pramanik believes existing laws cannot protect minorities because the political will is missing in the country. “Even lawmakers from minority communities turn a blind eye when their own people face abuses and injustices,” said Pramanik, secretary of the Bangladesh National Hindu Grand Alliance. Pramanik said that along with a commission and a law for minorities, there should be a separate fully fledged ministry overseeing all issues related to minorities. Nearly 90 percent of Bangladesh’s 160 million people profess to be adherents of Sunni Islam. Hindus make up about 8 percent and the rest belong to other faiths including Buddhism and Christianity. More than 99 percent of people in Bangladesh belong to the ethnic Bengali community. However, an estimated three million are from more than 45 ethnic indigenous groups, mostly Buddhists, Hindus and Christians.

Lol and they lecture others on protection of minorities , hypocrites

Bro, I am a Bangladeshi Muslim and I follow my religion and I have no hatred for Hindus or other minority. They are our brothers but look at the comments of mostly Sylhet based Bangladeshis. Whenever a Bangladeshi Muslim try to speak for minorities they automatically spread venom and accuse him to be a Hindu. Bro, always try to ignore this type of people. They may be from Bangladesh or India. Hypocrites and extremists must be avoided.

I am not talking with you. Ignore my posts, please.

Minorities in BD have their best chance under the able leadership of SHW. They wouldn't want the era of Ershad and Ziaur Rahman to come back ever again. SHW too has to pander to those elements that help her win, therefore not entirely surprising to read that some of her electoral promises about minorities are yet to be fulfilled.

False flagging hindutva scum with another troll thread.

so now gov will give them protection ? they can not buy their own from paramacy ? ?

This Hindu-Buddhist-Christian unity council is actually a Hindutva extremist organization, for deception purpose they included some Buddhist and Christian useful idiots to give an impression that it is a non communal organization. But top to bottom, it is the equivalent of RSS and VHP in Bangladesh. These traitors maintain close contact with Indian Hindu extremist organizations and lobby in India to ''Take action'' against Bangladesh.

These Hindutva thugs manipulate incidence to make it look like persecution against Hindus, or outright invent persecution stories. If any Hindu girl love marriage any Muslim, this organization brand that as 'kidnapping and forced conversion of Hindu girls'. If any Hindu got robbed or mugged by any criminal, they paint it with communal brush and make it Muslim persecuting Hindus. These scoundrels even count Hindu to Hindu attack as a minority persecution. Most of their statistics of persecution are fake and manipulated. If properly investigated, at least 95 percent of those would be revealed as manipulated or outright false.

I am not denying that some persecution against minorities happening in Bangladesh. But compared to India or Myanmar, minorities in Bangladesh are living a much more secured life. No one is lynching them or branding them as foreigners. In many respectable professions, they are over represented in Bangladesh, they are over represented in civil administration and govt. jobs. Still this fifth column Hindu-Buddhist-Christian unity council is doing propaganda against Bangladesh to their foreign masters. Common patriotic Bangladeshi people irrespective of religion need to be alert about it's vicious intention.

Yes uncle Tom I know and believe that you are Bangladeshi and Muslim.

However, Abdullah ibn ubai was also a big big Muslim and Arab. Fortunately ( for you) there is no prophet after Muhammad (pbuh), and that's why it's hard to catch Bangladeshi Muslims ( munafiq actually) like you. Although no prophet is also require to open your mask,we common folks are more than enough to unveil you.

However how is your delicious pork eating going Mr practicing Muslim ?

I am not talking with you. Ignore my posts, please.
So at least one person can shake you. Happy to know this.

But I am having difficulty to digest the enormity of treachery which this govt. has done against the nation.

But this robbery was beyond my imagination. Day before yesterday, we could claim Bangladesh a flawed democracy. But now, it is nothing but a full fledged, illegal dictatorship. This is very painful.
