Bangladesh yet to respond on India's offer to manufacture Covaxin

NEW DELHI: Even as Bangladesh is shopping for Chinese and Russian vaccines, Dhaka missed an opportunity to become a production centre for Covaxin, with Indian assistance, which could have made them more self-sufficient.

This week, Bangladesh suspended the next round of vaccination with the Covishield vaccine
from Serum Institute, India has renewed its offer to Bangladesh to set up a co-production facility in Bangladesh to manufacture the Covaxin. However, the offer, which was first made by India in December 2020, is yet to receive a response from Bangladesh, said sources in Dhaka.

Local media reported that the Indian high commission served a ‘note verbale’ (an informal diplomatic missive) renewing India’s offer.

Bangladesh preferred to import the Covishield
vaccine from Serum Institute and sell to their citizens. The Indian offer, envisaged two things — one, that Bangladesh would be able to manufacture for its citizens, and second, could also export in the region.

India has sent 103 lakh doses of Covishield to Bangladesh so far, the first consignment being on January 21 — 33 lakh has been gifted and 70 lakh purchased by Bangladesh government. They have ordered another 20 lakh doses which has now been delayed, given India’s own demands.

India had even agreed to fund phase 3 trials for Covaxin in Bangladesh. But there has been no response from the Bangladesh government.

Bharat Biotech and International Centre for Diarrhoeal Disease Research, Bangladesh had signed an agreement in December 2020 to conduct phase 3 trials for Covaxin in Bangladesh. The

Sheikh Hasina government is yet to approve the trial. Now, Bangladesh is stuck, but it could have been in a much better place to vaccinate its people. India was empowering Bangladesh, instead of only being a market.

With Covishield now proving difficult to access, Bangladesh is seeking to buy the Chinese Sinopharm and the Russian Sputnik vaccines. Local media reported that the Bangladesh government had not taken the Covaxin, or the Chinese or Russian vaccines because they had not been approved by WHO. However, now they find themselves in a spot.

In view of India’s second Covid wave, Bangladesh has imposed an embargo on land movements from India. Bangladesh’s own surge has been fairly steep as well, forcing the country into a lockdown earlier this month.

Actually US's Fauci says that it is very effective against one of the new variants in India.

It did not make difference in India as it was given to probably less than 1% of the Indian population so far. AstraZeneca is the major vaccine the Indians have been using.

Anyway, BD should not take this offer as it looks like a lame attempt to persuade BD to not press ahead with its own vaccine.

BD is now going down the route of local production of Russian vaccine and has given the green-light to human trials on its own vaccine. With all going well, BD could be using its own vaccine in the 2nd half of this year and this has immense strategic health and economic benefits.

Covaxin was not produced in significant numbers like Covishield but most people who are aware of both vaccines were actually opting and requesting for covaxin since it has fewer after effects unlike Covishield which causes fever, bodyaches for 3-4 days

" WASHINGTON: Covaxin, India's home-grown Covid-19 vaccine, has been found to neutralise the 617 variant of the deadly virus, White House chief medical adviser and America's top pandemic expert Dr Anthony Fauci said here "

India Total Vaccination Doses 14,65,39,994
Dose1 12,22,19,885 | Dose2 2,43,20,109
Covishield 90.74% |
Covaxin 9.26%

So almost 1%.

Do you know how many doses of the Covaxin India is now able to produce per month?

In terms of total does, it 1%.
Production capacity is 50 million per year but it's being augmented to reach 100 million per year and three new factories will be used to produce more.

Covishield production by SII is far higher 500 million, the largest in the world.

Even 100 million per year is nothing bearing in mind India's population. India will be mainly reliant on AstraZeneca then.

Do you know why India cannot produce say 1 billion doses or more like some of the others like Pfizer are doing?

BAL and dorbesh of beximco in connivance with indian aholes have been seeking to thwart production of covid vaccines in BD to create a monopoly and thus an opportunity to rob the nation via-a-vis beximco/Bal and strategic control vis-a-vis india.....

Happy this has spectacularly blown up in their faces. Russian vaccine is extremely effective, chinese less so..... BD should immediately begin producing the former and give go ahead for production BDs own vaccine Bancovid.

SII is ramping up production to 1 billion doses and with unblocking of America raw material it shd get that target.

Then there is Sputnik who will produce 750 million doses in three years.

And another Indian vaccine by Zydus will produce 200 million dose.

India needs to import active pharma ingredients for covid vaccines thus has limitation as to how much they can scale up.

BD will also face similar raw material issues when it begins production

Is Bangladesh vaccine ready for production?

Apparently I'm wrong about Covaxin production increase. They are augmenting to much higher production rates.

BD will get emergency supplies of 4 million doses direct from Russia as it's supplies of AstraZeneca will run out in 1-2 weeks and they should come in May.

Anyway BD is in a very good position as regards the virus, which is again back in its box and so 2 months or so stoppage of AstraZeneca vaccine supply should not be much of an issue.

Local production of Sputnik vaccine will be set up as soon as possible and as BD is 2nd best in S Asia in medical technology, it should be able to quickly start producing Sputnik with Russian licence and technical assistance.

One thing I do not like is that the government is also interested in Sinopharm vaccine which has almost zero efficacy with one dose and only 50-60% with 2 doses. I can see this creating issues between people who have AstraZeneca/Sputnik and Sinopharm as there is a lot of difference in terms of protection between the UK/Russian vaccines and the Chinese one.

BD should not take any and all vaccines as it is not in that desperate a situation.
