Bangladesh will have no better friend than US over next 50 years: Peter Haas

US Ambassador to Bangladesh Peter Haas on Tuesday said the United States will remain a ‘steadfast partner’ of Bangladesh in its journey towards further development.

"The United States should remain the same steadfast partner to Bangladesh for the next fifty years as it has been over the past fifty years," he said, mentioning three things that he plans to report when he gets to Washington.

Ambassador Haas came up with the statement while delivering a speech at ‘DCAB Talk’ hosted by the Diplomatic Correspondents Association, Bangladesh (DCAB) at Jatiya Press Club.

DCAB President Rezaul Karim Lotus moderated the programme while General Secretary AKM Moinuddin delivered welcome remarks.

Ambassador Haas has been staying in Bangladesh for about three months, and he is about to go on his first trip to Washington since he arrived in Dhaka.

"While I am there, I plan to meet with a number of US government officials, congressional staffers, NGOs, and businesspeople to discuss my experiences and observations in this country so far," said the US envoy.

Haas mentioned that he will say in Washington that in the last 50 years, Bangladesh had had no better friend than the United States. “And that it will have no better friend over the next 50 years.”

He said both the successes of Bangladesh and the challenges it faces are real. Haas said Bangladesh will soon graduate from Least Developed Country status, and it is steadily progressing towards becoming a middle-income country. “These accomplishments are real, tangible, and truly extraordinary.”

The envoy said Bangladesh’s geography on a low-lying river delta, with a long coastline and large floodplains, makes it extremely vulnerable to the effects of climate change.

He said when it comes to democracy and human rights, the United States raised their concerns publicly and privately. He reiterated they are concerned about press freedom, especially the Digital Security Act, and several draft laws and regulations that could inhibit press freedom.

“We are concerned about human rights abuses, including extrajudicial killings and enforced disappearances,” Ambassador Haas said.

On December 10, 2021, Human Rights Day, the United States imposed sanctions on the Rapid Action Battalion and some of its officials based on what he said was “credible evidence” of serious human rights abuse.

He said they are also concerned about insufficient labour rights and poor working conditions in Bangladesh. Bangladesh, unfortunately, lost access to the US Generalised System of Preferences trade benefit, or GSP, in 2013, due to these concerns, he mentioned.

These concerns are also causing Bangladesh to miss out on the US Development Finance Corporation, a massive source of investment capital from the United States, the envoy added.

He said they are ready to continue to work with Bangladesh and build on the progress they have made together in food security, health, and reducing poverty – while identifying new and innovative approaches to address issues like climate change, promoting democratic principles, and sustaining Bangladesh’s impressive economic growth.

The USA or any other developed country fails to understand that if the BD laborers/ workers are given freedom, they will keep on pressing for the higher and higher salaries until they get American salaries.

BD balloon will shortly lose its steam at that point. Another failed country. So, it is imperative that labor rights are kept under control.

No, our Alga Momen will not laugh but will make some silly comments in response. Only a day before he was telling the Press, some country only talks of development partnership but without bringing in the development money.

He was referring to the USA. Now, I wonder, what will be his spontaneous reaction to Ambassador Hass's comments.

Joe Biden, ruler of world, that governest all things with deceit,

Hail! for unlawful it is that all mortals should address Thee.

For we are Thy slaves , taking the image only of Thy voice, as many mortal things as live and move upon the earth.

Therefore will I hymn Thee, and sing Thy might forever.

Ps - This hymn is dedicated to these Bangladeshi people who are more western than westerns themselves. And also who wanted to submit to USA will by kneeling down on their own knees!

You got to admit, this is getting more entertaining by the minute...

Now wait for the honorable Li Ji Ming to issue another bomb to go viral.....:p:

It'll be the Chinese language equivalent of - "Talgaas Amar" !

On a more serious note, why doesn't the State Dept. back up these proclamations with some concrete action??

Which would help the workers in the Bangladesh factories the State Dept. feels so much pain for.

Like abolishing almost all tariffs on all Bangladesh exports?? Like CHINA has already done?

HELLO ???

Now that would be showing the actions befitting a "steadfast friend".... 8-)

Dear Mr. Fortuneteller,

Would you please kindly share when will the balloon pop? in 2-5 years or 20-50 years down the road? Or is it popping tomorrow?

Are you giving an analysis or saw a dream about it?

If you are an analyst and doing a forecast please share your insight so we can learn some. Please also share why your prediction holds more value than IMF, Worldbank outlooks. How they got it wrong and you are correct?

Tell me, did you do your phd from whatsapp University like you know who?

Or if you (most probable) had a dream and want to share what you saw. Bro! cumon it was just a dream, we all see them and then forget about it, nothing to get excited about.

Hope you clear your position:

So, Speak now or forever hold your peace

Thank you

American State Department cannot back up the claims by Ambassador Hass because America itself needs at least 2,000 billion dollars to fix its own infrastructures. So, to become a development partner of BD, America may have to borrow money from China.

More to the above, American companies probably do not go out of their country to undertake development/ construction works in other countries except probably Saudi Arabia.

I visited Zia Fertilizer Factory in Ashuganj (?) many years ago. The plant was built by a Canadian company. That company built brick houses fitted with swimming pools. They brought their families.

However, the Japanese team praised the Canadian project.

In the case of Japanese companies, engineers/ workers live in makeshift apartments in a camp, one person one tiny room fitted with a small fridge and A/C when the project is far away from the city centers.

So, even if America provides money the project costs will be triple than those built by China. And so, BD will become poorer when paying back the loan money.
