Shakib leaves New Zealand in tatters
The Bulletin by Peter Burdon

October 18, 2008

New Zealand 155 for 9 (Vettori 49*, Shakib 6-32) trail Bangladesh (Mehrab 83, Mushfiqur 79, Vettori 5-59) by 90 runs
Scorecard and ball-by-ball details
How they were out

Left-arm spinners ruled the day on which 15 wickets fell in Chittagong. After Daniel Vettori took his 16th five-wicket haul, Shakib Al Hasan rattled the New Zealand batsmen with career-best figures of 6 for 32. At stumps New Zealand trailed Bangladesh by 90 runs with one wicket remaining.

It isn't often that a player, who gets a five-for and is the side's top scorer, gets overshadowed by another. But Vettori, who now has 37 wickets against Bangladesh, 22 more than any other New Zealand bowler, stands at the edge of the spotlight that is on Shakib. Mehrab Hossain jnr and Mushfiqur Rahim fought valiantly to take their side to 245 but it never looked like it would be enough to hold off New Zealand's attacking batsmen. However the visitors' top four batsmen haven't played a Test in the subcontinent before and the inexperience showed.

Tea New Zealand 57 for 4 (McCullum 3*, Flynn 0*) trail Bangladesh 245 by 188 runs

Bangladesh's spin attack fought back in the first Test against New Zealand by taking four wickets in the afternoon session of the second day in Chittagong. New Zealand was reduced to 57 for four at lunch, with Brendon McCullum and Daniel Flynn at the crease.

After Daniel Vettori ripped through the Bangladesh lower-order in the last half hour before lunch, the spin twins of Shakib Al Hasan and Abdur Razzak have done the damage to the visitors.

The opening pair of Jamie How and Aaron Redmond got through the first hour, but was focused on survival, rather than scoring runs, just as their opponents had done yesterday. After 10 overs, there had been just 10 scoring shots and the first hour produced 25 runs. There was little interest in attack. As so often happens in these situations, wickets began to fall.

The introduction of Shakib and Razzak in the second hour saw the game turn. How was the first to go when he spooned a leading edge to silly mid-off. Debutant Jesse Ryder, who looked nervous as he entered the crease, perished similarly soon after.

The demise of Ross Taylor may have been harsh. He was adjudged lbw when replays suggested he may have hit the ball onto his pad. Aaron Redmond's lbw was also debatable as the ball may have been heading down the leg side. His 19 came off 65 deliveries.

But the session belonged to Bangladesh's spin twins. Shakib finished with three for 11 off seven over. He was ably supported by Abdur Razzak with one for 17 off seven.

New Zealand will need to be more positive after tea to have any chance of reaching the Bangladesh's score, let alone getting a healthy lead into the second innings.

Lunch Bangladesh 245 (Mehrab 83, Mushfiqur 79, Vettori 5-59) v New Zealand

Daniel Vettori ripped through the Bangladesh lower-order on the second morning of the first Test in Chittagong to claim his fourth five-wicket haul against the hosts. Bangladesh were dismissed for 245 on the stroke of lunch, after being 229 for 5 just 30 minutes earlier.

A slower ball from Iain O'Brien provided the first breakthrough as Mehrab Hossain jnr misjudged the pace and played the ball straight to short midwicket. He added four to his overnight score and was out for 83.

Following that loss, debutant Naeem Islam and Mushfiqur Rahim looked comfortable, leaving deliveries outside the off stump and scoring off the limited number of loose balls.

After they had put on 41, Naeem got a rush of blood to the head, dancing down the track to offspinner Jeetan Patel to be comprehensively stumped. Mushfiqur was dismissed in the next over for an impressive 79 and the innings folded soon after.

Each of the New Zealand's bowlers was again on the spot, although Kyle Mills and O'Brien only had short spells due to the high temperatures, hovering around 30 degree Celsius in the first hour.

Vettori, with 5 for 59, was the pick of the bowlers while O'Brien claimed three scalps at a cost of 36 runs. This was the 16th time Vettori has taken a five-for in Tests, while it was the first time Bangladesh survived 100 overs against New Zealand.

Bangladesh gain upper hand over New Zealand in first Test Updated at: 1815 PST, Saturday, October 18, 2008 :victory::victory::victory:
CHITTAGONG: Left-arm spinner Shakib Al Hasan took a maiden five-wicket haul to help Bangladesh gain an upper hand over New Zealand on the second day of the opening Test here on Saturday.

The 21-year-old turned his left arm with magical effect to take 6-31, leaving the tourists reeling at 155-9 after Daniel Vettori took five wickets to shoot Bangladesh out for 245 in the first innings.

Vettori the batsman then held fort for the visitors as he went unbeaten on a pugnacious 48 with number ten Jeetan Patel falling in the last over of the day for nought, leaving the tourists 90 runs behind.

Hasan had Jamie How (16) and debutant Jesse Ryder (one) out in successive overs, before trapping Aaron Redmond (19) to wrestle back the initiative for the home team.

Hasan, who had just three wickets to show in his previous six Tests, then got the prized wickets of Brendon McCullum (25) and Jacob Oram (nought) to leave New Zealand in tatters at 100-7 before Vettori and Kyle Mills put up some fight.

In between left-arm spin partner Abdur Razzak trapped Ross Taylor for 12.

Daniel Flynn (19) and McCullum did try to take the attack to the bowlers, with Flynn hoisting two boundaries and a six before he edged to wicket-keeper Mushfiqur Rahim to give debutant Naeem Islam a wicket in his first over.

Vettori and Mills (four) added 26 for the eighth wicket before Hasan struck again, forcing an edge off Mills to the keeper. Hasan's previous best of 2-44 was against the same opponents at Wellington in January this year.

In the morning Vettori took three of the six wickets to fall in the space of just 57 runs to finish with 5-59, his 16th five-wicket haul on a slow Divisional Stadium pitch.

The 29-year-old spinner dismissed Rahim (79), Mashrafe Mortaza (nought) and Razzak (11) after Bangladesh resumed at the overnight score of 183-4.

Vettori was ably supported by paceman Iain O'Brien (3-36) and off-spinner Patel who finished with 2-67.

Bangladesh were pegged back from the start, losing Mehrab Hossain to O'Brien in the fourth over of the day for a fine career-best 83.

Mehrab, playing only his second Test, miscued a drive and was caught at short cover by Redmond. He hit 11 boundaries during his resolute 179-ball knock.

Mehrab and Rahim added an invaluable 144 for the fifth wicket. Rahim also added 41 for the sixth wicket with Islam (14) before Vettori dismissed him off a miscued sweep. Rahim struck 12 boundaries and a six during his 209-ball innings

How they were out

Bangladesh have regained the upper hand in the first Test against New Zealand in Chittagong, losing just one wicket in the afternoon session and increasing its lead to 187.

The early loss of Tamim Iqbal with the score at 71 for 5 put the visitors in the box seat, but the following partnership between first-innings bowling hero Shakib Al Hasan and Mushifiqur Rahim carried Bangladesh to 113 for 5 at tea.

All the Bangladesh batsmen found it difficult to score during the session. Tamim took 35 minutes to add to his lunchtime score of 30 and was eventually caught and bowled by Daniel Vettori for 33.

The New Zealand bowlers can take credit for the slow rate. Daniel Vettori was the most economical, having the figures of 17 for 2 off 19 overs. He continued to flight the ball, but he and Jeetan Patel lost the ability to spin it as much as they had earlier in the day.

This led Vettori to revert to his pace attack in the second hour. Both Kyle Mills and Jacob Oram got the ball to reverse-swing and were unlucky not to claim more scalps. Oram particularly got the ball to tail into the batsmen late and caused them both some problems.

But Shakib (27 off 59) and Rahim (30 off 98) kept their wickets intact. There was a notable increase in intensity during the session as the match hung in the balance. The fielding effort improved, while the batsmen were determined to be unbeaten at the break.

The final session of the day will be vital for both teams. New Zealand will not want to chase more than 250, but the hosts will want to set a target of over 300.

Lunch Bangladesh 49 for 4 (Tamim 30*, Patel 2-12) lead New Zealand 171 (Vettori 55*, Shakib 7-36) by 123 runs

The spinners continued to dominate on the third morning of the first Test between New Zealand and Bangladesh in Chittagong.

Resuming the day at 155 for 9, the visitors reached 171 before Shakib Al Hasan took his seventh wicket of the innings to dismiss Iain O'Brien. He ended with figures of 7 for 36, a Bangladesh record against all countries.

The dismissal of O'Brien was typical of his team. He tried to fend off a ball outside the leg stump, but was bowled between his legs by a turning delivery. Daniel Vettori, the only player to offer any resistance, was stranded on 55.

With a valuable first innings lead of 74, Bangladesh began their innings in a more positive frame of mind. They were looking to score runs and had the run rate up at three an over for most of the morning - a direct contrast to their first innings where the run rate hovered around one. It was not until the 12th over that the first maiden was bowled.

Junaid Siddique became the fourth player to lose his wicket to a pace bowler when he was caught behind by Aaron Redmond off Kyle Mills. And after just nine overs, the spin twins of Vettori and Jeetan Patel came on to bowl. The pair took over where they left off in the first innings, giving the ball flight and turning it sharply, as more wickets began to fall.

Patel had Rajin Saleh caught in front of his stumps by bringing a ball back from well outside the off stump. In the very next over Vettori accounted for Mohammad Ashraful who got an outside edge to a ball he was trying to dispatch over mid-off and was brilliantly caught at point by Redmond. Patel then dismissed first innings hero Mehrab Hossain jnr just before the lunch break to leave the hosts struggling at 49 for 4.

Tamim Iqbal, however, continued to play the holding role, hitting five boundaries in his unbeaten 30 and much will depend on him and Mushfiqur Rahim after lunch, if Bangladesh are to have any hopes of registering their first Test win against New Zealand.
