Dhaka, Aug 8 (PTI) Bangladesh has begun withdrawal of its temporary army camps from the south-eastern Chittagong Hill Tracts, dominated by Buddhist tribals, to implement a peace accord signed in 1997. Two camps established in 1988 in Khagrachhari and Rangamati were dismantled yesterday to ensure security in nearby areas, the Daily Star reported.

The Sheikh Hasina government on July 29 announced that it will pull out one brigade troops and 35 temporary security camps from the region by this September. The region is dominated by Buddhist tribals but a large population of Bengali Muslims settlers also occupy the place.

The land used for the camps was returned to its original owners after giving a sum of Taka 2,000 each a month as rent, the zone''s Acting Commander Major Mamunur Rashid was quoted as saying. However, the army is entitled to use the land until 2011 as per the agreement and the owners are not allowed to construct anything.

Around 10 other temporary camps under Khagrachhari brigade of the army will be withdrawn in phases, the paper said quoting sources. Under the peace accord, the government is supposed to withdraw all military camps and security forces from CHT except the three cantonments.

The region witnessed an armed struggle against efforts to settle Bengalis culminating in the 1997 peace accord.

Fascist Sheikh Mujib addressed the tribals and declared somewhere in the Chittagong Hill Tracts (CHT) in probably 1973, "From today I am PROMOTING you to Bangali.-----." This declaration sowed the seeds of discontent among the tribal people, because they are Chakma, Morma, Khashia, Tipra, Rajbongshi and many others, but are definitely not Bangali. By trying to promote them to BANGALI, SM was punishing them for not being loyal with Bangladesh during the Liberation War of 1971.

After his death, Zia also had to follow the same policy. He settled there many Bangali from Noakhali. A war was then initiated with the direct help of very friendly country India. India supplied the tribals arms, gave them training and guides to fight against Bangladesh. Naturally, Bangladesh Army had to build garrisons and camps in those places. Finally, the Indian design failed and peace, with elements of war, returned to that land.

I hope, vacating some of the posts will not jeopardize the lives of Bangalis living in those places. If it turns out that way, the popularity of Nobel Prize seeking Shaikh Hasina will plummet. SH is taking too much of a political risk by her decision.

Eastwatch BRO,

You are way off the mark to understand the reality of Bengalis in HT. In 1984, I met a Musulli in one of the CTG Masjids, who happened to ask for shelter and in return he was willing to teach Arabic. After talking to him, I found out that he was originally from Rangpur, who happened to migrate to HT but lost his love-ones to Shanti Bahini and fled away with one cloth. The notoriety of Shanties and Chakmas against BDeshis that he described was appalling. On a separate note I had a friend named Vantu Chakma, who vehemently supported Shanties and once I asked him, why? His answer was so mean that I couldn't look at him about it anymore. He said that just because Shantis were there, Chakmas were able to blackmail GOB in getting special benefits from it in almost all sectors. Hasina's ordering to move our troops from HT had far reaching impacts, which weren't seen by many but look at how it just started,

Allow me to rephrase that in a meaningfull way "Jago he all MOFIZ" take your luta kombol and move fast to grab free land in hill tracts. Kick all indegenous people out of their land and make that to yours. Get free girls, free food and free tresspassing. Shame on you M_Saint.

We have relatively calm situation in hill tracts and its high time to call our own troops home. If needed they can go there in no time. Good job army, my salute goes towards you.:coffee:

CHT is part of Bd so anyone can live there whether Chkma like it or not. Chakma's can practice their culture and language but this land can not be preserve for them only. This joker must kidding. If they don't like to stay in Bd than get the **** out where ever they came from but Bangla speaking Muslim have all the right to stay there as long as they desire.

La-Hasina playing with fire. Her days may be ended just like her Malaun blooded father.

This neither about hindutva nor about chakmas own interest. This insurgency was instigated, funded and trained by india for making CHT like another sikkim. And awami subversive move of so called "peace accord" and withdrawing security forces are making way for that indian move.

In Bangladesh Chakmas and indeginious people enjoys more rights than ordinary people - in higher education, jobs, loans etc. But these same Chakmas are using hostage taking, extortion, torture and killing as their repression tool against ordinary Bangladeshis. Now Awami regime actually given Chakmas license to use these repression tools using the cover of indigenous rights.
