Bangladesh ranked 72 last year

Bangladesh has again topped gender equality in South Asia, said the World Economic Forum.

Bangladesh jumped 25 notches to 47th place in the Global Gender Gap ranking 2017.

Bangladesh closed 72% of the gender gap, said the study published on Thursday.

According to the report, Bangladesh scored 0.719 on the gender parity index and was ranked the highest among the South Asian nations while came second Maldives at 106.

India slipped 21 slots and ranked 108 while Sri Lanka ranked 109, Nepal 111, Bhutan 124 and Pakistan 143.

It ranked 7th among 155 countries in the political empowerment category but performed worst in economic participation and opportunity with in which it currently ranks 129th.

Bangladesh had ranked 72 last year.

Through the Global Gender Gap Report, the World Economic Forum quantifies the magnitude of gender disparities and tracks their progress over time, with a specific focus on the relative gaps between women and men across four key areas: health, education, economy and politics.

. . . . . .
No wonder after being ruled by women in last 27 years

.
I mean when the Prime minister, Opposition leader and even third opposition leader are female, or how there are many women in Universities/colleges as there are men, or women constituting the bulk of our economic machine: textile industry, anybody can see that we're making quite a progress in the field of gender equality.

.
So shameful for Pakistan. Such low ranking due to mulla declaring women's are created to remain in "char diwari". Half Pakistani population which is girls, stay home uneducated and unemployed. How is Pakistan planning to change this?

Its more shameful that Bangladesh makes the problem go away just on paper rather than own up to it like India and Pakistan and actually structurally and concretely address it over time (if you notice where India and Pakistan are for example are in corruption perception index compared to Bangladesh).

Also WEF on top of using the BBS data...assumes (quite badly though they do mention this, of course no BD member would care to read the whole report) that a RMG sweatshop is an instrumental change for a woman's economic independence over say village employment/housewife which are seriously undercounted in economic value to begin with (numerous studies are reported on it)....i.e question of realised remuneration vs actual economic contribution.

Congratulations to Bangladesh. We can learn a few things from Bangladesh.

Like how to become a far more corrupt country than you already are and erase numbers on paper rather than address the core problem on ground? Not a good thing to learn at all.

Bhadraloks are generally better than North Indians and Pakistanis so no wonder.

In what exactly? Corruption prevalence and stagnation?
