Bangladesh hopes to sign a free trade agreement with India this year, its Commerce Secretary Md Ghulam Hussain said here.

"We have agreed that the FTA will be good for both the countries," he said after addressing a Singapore seminar on investment in Bangladesh.

FTA documents have been exchanged and negotiations were underway, he said but declined to give a specific timeframe for signing the FTA.

Bangladesh is also negotiating FTAs with Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Malaysia, he said.

Speaking at the business seminar, Hussain highlighted Dhaka government's pro-business approach and called for investments in ports, power and infrastructure sector.

Public Private Partnership will be encouraged, he said.

Diplomatic observers see strong potential for business and investments in Bangladesh through the FTAs but said that the political differences among South Asian countries are delaying such trade collaborations and cooperations.

This is really a ridiculous move to sign such a deal with the bharatis before clearing it to the nation how it is gonna benefit bd and whether it will reduce or more widen the trade gap with India and will flood the local market with Indian goods... Other then clearing all these it will not be wise to sign such deals.

@Sami: You do realise FTA implies you can flood the market with your goods too? In fact Bangladesh is a relatively small market for Indian Multinationals. But India is a relatively huge market for Bangladeshi cos. So stop complaining.

According to our Pakistani friends here, having an FTA with China didn't harm their country at all.

Did you read my post... I said it clearly it needs to make a level playing field and needs to reduce the trade gap... not widen it..

Bangladesh is a relatively small market thats why BD is Indias third largest export destination... 166 million is not a small market.. The real problem is India is creating one after another barrier so that BD goods can not reach Indian market... BD has a lower labor cost so its procuts are also cheaper that is why india is loosing RMG market share and BD goods specially toiletries can take a big Indian market share. But due to creation of barrier by imposing duty it is not happening.

I remember a "few" members were complaining that India is not signing an FTA with BD just a few days back on some news about giving them access to the garments industry in India.

Bharati companies taking over BD is not the issue as the demand of Indian goods are decreasing in BD due to increase of quality of BD goods compaered to previous years. But in some cases we still need some development and need access bharati market to capture that. Until India is giving such access there are no reason for signing such deal. The other concern is that majority of the bharati goods come to bangladesh through smmugling not through legal ways. We still need improvement in the ligh industry and steel manufacturing to save those industries from bharati destructive agenda through this FTA.
