DHAKA, April 21, 2016 (BSS) - State Minister for Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Nasrul Hamid today said the government would import 2,000 MW electricity from India in future.

"Currently we are importing 600MW power from India and has a plan to increase the figure to 2,000MW in the coming years," he said while addressing a workshop on "Power Market Development in India: Key Lessons Learnt" as the chief guest at Mukti Hall of Bidyut Bhaban.

Chaired by power division secretary Monowar Islam, the workshop was also addressed, among others, by M Abul Kalam Azad, Principal Secretary to the Prime Minister, Dr Jyoti Parikh, Executive Director, IRADe (International Research and Action for Development)and Dr Karl Wurster, Deputy Director, Economic Growth Office, USAID, Bangladesh.

Director General of Power Cell under Power Division Mohammad Hossain delivered welcome speech, while V K Kharbanda, Project Director, SARI/EI, IRADe gave vote of thanks.

Nasrul Hamid said this workshop would help the government learn about Indian power market and its activities as Bangladesh had prepared a five-year plan in the power sector.

"We have a target to reach the generation capacity to 24,000 MW by 2021 and 50 percent power would come from coal and the rest would come from other sources," he said and launched a report on electricity policies/ regulations/laws of SAC to promote CBET.

Session Chair Dr Ahmad Kaikaus, Additional Secretary of Power Division, said Power sector in India has grown significantly across the value chain since independence, both in terms of generation capacity and transmission and distribution (TD) system.

He said the total power generating capacity of utilities and non-utilities has grown from a meager 1362 MW in 1947 to 267 GW at the end of March, 2015.

Other speakers discussed the present state of Indian power market and put forward ideas as to how Bangladesh can benefit from the Indian power market.

Why dont build your own? why u should rely on someone else? did you forget how Indian bullied Nepal by closing the trade route? Iran, China, India (although 25% of their population have never seen electricity in their miserable lives according to world bank data) offered us transmission line we never accepted from anyone except Iran and that too only for 70 or 100MW. which even if Iran close cant hurt Pakistan in anyways..

I am sure this will be a short term agreement, every country wants to be self sufficient when it comes to power.

You have $26 billion in reserve, why dont ask China to build a plant for you instead of relying on someone.. they can switch off that electricity anytime bcoz of heat waves, load shedding etc..

I think you don't understand basic thing, we are building power sector and China is contributing in it.
You will not get as 1000MW by tomorrow just because you spend billion in it. By that logic any big infrastructure would have been made within few days

you had for few years in whole time, may be just 3-4 years

Not surprised by your low self-esteem . Your ancestors repeatedly defeated by invading Arabs,Persians,Afghans

same invader who used to fvuk your princess? most of the invaders were Afghani, and most of Afghani are now part of Pakistan.. aka Pashtun, total Pashtun population of Pakistan is more then population of Afghan Uzbek, Tajik, Hazara and Afghan pashtun combined :D

PK was ahead of you in GDP per capita till 2008/09 so for 95 % of your existence we were ahead . As for your poverty well the less said the better . BD was never ahead in GDP per capita or economy and might never get ahead .
