Bangladesh will obtain a significant amount of foreign direct investment (FDI) from the USA in the years to come as the US business community is convinced about prospects for investing their money in several major sectors here, commerce minister GM Quader said Monday after a consultation on ways of expansion of bilateral trade and business.

While talking to reporters after holding a meeting with the visiting US business delegation at the secretariat, the minister said that members of the delegation understood the package benefit for the foreign investors in Bangladesh and the investment climate here in order to make decision.

“I hope that Bangladesh will receive significant amounts of investment from the US entrepreneurs as the business community of both the countries have sincere endeavors to let it happen,” Quader told reporters.

The minister, however, declined to make any comment as to whether there was any discussion on the much-talked-about Ticfa (Trade and Investment Cooperation Framework Agreement) and GSP (Generalised Scheme of Preferences) facility—the major tools under negotiation and re-negotiation by the two sides.

“We will not entertain any question on Ticfa and GSP. Stick to today’s discussion,’ Quader said.

Speaking at the press briefing, head of the 30-member US business delegation Jose Farnandez, who is also US assistant secretary for business and economic affairs, said the US authorities are willing to talk to Bangladesh authorities on some issues against the backdrop of recent tragedies at garment factories to find ways towards amicable solutions.

He said the US-Bangladesh commercial relations have boosted to double in last one decade and there is further prospect to grow.

“We are grateful to Bangladesh business community as well as the government for this and we ant to talk about recent complications, triggered from tragic death of hundreds of workers at garment factories due to non-compliance,” Fernandez said.

He said the US investors have forecast that Bangladesh will be the ‘central business hub’ in South-East Asia in the coming years and looking for effective time to invest in the sectors like IT (Information Technology), pharmaceuticals, energy and agriculture sectors here.

Bangladesh has prospect to grow significantly in the days to come and it would create a large consumer base in this country in the future.

“The US companies are intent to target the future consumers of this country for the investment,” he said.

All the best to Bangladesh may you become another south korea
Just one Question BD is in South Asia right

.
And when did BD become Southeast Asia??

It has always been like that after the creation of east Pakistan and separation from Delhi in 1947. In reality, we are both SE Asian as well as South Asian. Like Turkey, BD is a bridge among three economic blocks. China, ASEAN and India. If India quickly does not recognize this reality, it will suffer. Indian economy will not grow to its potentiality.

However, I have a feeling that the policy planners of the USA want BD to be an economic partner of the ASEAN and China more than with India. US Assistant Secretary for Business and Economic Affairs spoke in that line.

I wonder, if the USA wants India to remain isolated from ASEAN and China or what? USA knows SAARC will remain inactive due to Indian hegemony, and if BD keeps on depending on SAARC its economy will not be able to grow.

USA wants another moderate Muslim country after Turkey to grow socially, industrially, economically and in influence. We want US direct investment in any fields of their choice. It will work as a magnet to invesmentt by other countries. We will become an industrial power house with these infusions.

India is much more closer to South-East Asia than Bangladesh thanks to NE states and A&N islands
