Bangladesh seeks Indian advice to purchase Russian oil, wheat: Momen​

Bangladesh has sought advice from India as to how oil and wheat can be purchased from Russia.

Foreign minister AK Abdul Momen revealed this while answering a query of a newsman in his office on Monday afternoon.

The foreign minister returned home after attending a conference on rivers held in Assam, the northeastern state of India. On the sideline of the conference, Momen had a discussion with Indian foreign minister S Jaishankar.

When asked about the discussion on the Russia-Ukraine situation between two neighbouring countries, Abdul Momen said, "We have discussed with India about the situation there. They are working on tackling the energy crisis."

"Russia has proposed to sell oil to us. They also want to sell wheat. But we are afraid of sanctions (Western including US sanctions). We have wanted to know from India what they did. They have told us that. The energy crisis is a real problem for us. We are afraid of it. So we want their advice. Especially how they are purchasing oil and wheat from Russia," the foreign minister added.

Momen said, "We had a friendly discussion over the matter. They are tackling the situation (purchasing oil and wheat from Russia). They are a big country and they can manage. If they take any step, none imposes sanctions on them. We are small and poor country and there is pressure on us a bit more."

"You see their interference. You (mass media) encourage them. They come up with new issues every day. We would call them development partners. They don't provide any money for development. But now they are only giving advice," he said.

Momen said, "They are giving all types of suggestions so that the development is hampered. They are setting various conditions to create unrest. This is not acceptable. So we have discussed this India. Some regional organisations have to be established so that we can tackle any problem that may emerge. We have discussed this. We have discussed how we can achieve stability regionally."

He held a meeting with the Indian External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar in Guwahati on the sideline of the international river conference on May 28-29, where ministers, officials, and experts from South and Southeast Asian countries participated.

When the whole world was struggling to recover from the Covid-19 pandemic that rattled economies, health and supply chains, there came a new war with Russia invading Ukraine and it continues, he said.

In the wake of a sharp rise in commodities' prices, including vital supplies of energy and food from Russia and Ukraine, countries like Bangladesh are facing huge challenges.

Referring to his meeting with Jaishankar, he said he wanted to know from the Indian minister how they managed to import energy from Russia.

"They [India] did it technically. We want suggestions from India…they are a big country, they can manage. We are a small country, there is more pressure on us," he said.

Momen also discussed with Jaishankar the Indian restrictions on wheat export. Jaishankar said the restrictions are not applicable for Bangladesh. Even, private sector can import wheat from India if it is not for a third country.

The two foreign ministers discussed ways of boosting regional cooperation in the wake of global geopolitical changes, especially in the aftermath of the Russia-Ukraine war that is affecting the economies and supply chains.

Momen want US, EU stop noticing Democratic backsliding and authoritarian excess in Bangladesh and become another China who gives multi billion Dollar debt package, more corrupt, more authoritarian regime more good.

He does not consider IMF, World Bank American. He want the American president to sign bilateral loan deals with Bangladesh and send American construction workers to work in Bangladeshi mega projects! He consider IMF, World Bank tracking how their loan spend, whether corruption happens or not as problematic.

Genuine Democratic countries stick together. On the other hand, every variety of authoritarian, corrupt, would be authoritarian, Islamic extremist, Hindutva fascist and other type of religious, ethnic supremacist lead countries found themselves at odd with the West.

Irony is, he criticise the West because he is in the power and want to run the country authoritaian style. But if he were at the reciving end of the BNP lead authoritarian govt. hunting down AL, He would be singing a very different song for the West. Because China, Russia would still be glad to work with that BNP Govt. while the West would not.

Russian crude not suitable for refining in Bangladesh, state minister says​

Moscow has offered to sell oil to Dhaka amid the Ukraine war, but Russian crude is not suitable for refining in Bangladesh, Nasrul Hamid has said.

“Different countries are offering to sell oil to us, but first we need to think whether the oil is suitable for us,” the state minister for power, energy and mineral resources said at an event in the capital on Tuesday.

The United States, the European Union, Britain and some other key oil buyers have banned imports of Russian oil shortly after the invasion of Ukraine.
The low price of Russia’s oil is now a boon for many refiners, including some in India as they face shrinking margins. Foreign Minister AK Abdul Momen on Monday said he wanted to know from Indian officials how they were importing Russian oil and wheat by dodging the sanctions.

Nasrul, who had earlier revealed the Russian offer to sell oil to Bangladesh, faced questions from journalists on the matter at the 50th anniversary event of Bangladesh Power Development Board.

“We’ve seen that the offer of crude from a certain country [Russia] is not suitable for our refineries. We use Arabian Murban, which is a different kind of crude,” he said.

Bangladesh generally purchases crude from Saudi Aramco and Abu Dhabi National Oil Company. Kuwait, Malaysia, the United Arab Emirates, China, Indonesia, Thailand and India supply refined oil to Bangladesh.

According to Bangladesh Petroleum Corporation, the country has imported over 3 million tonnes of refined oil and 870,000 tonnes of crude in the first eight months of the current fiscal year.

How about India purchases Russian wheat and oil and re-export them to BD with a premium.

India consumes the entire Russian wheat imports and exports its own wheat to BD. In the case of oil, India refines the Russian oil with other oil, and exports a part of the mixed oil to BD, sources undefined.

Is not it a great idea and I deserve a Nobel Prize for these great invention original? Someone should propose it.

West with raging inflation and massive debt due to Covdi-19 is in no position to sanction BD.

This is an ideal time to show that BD is a sovereign country that makes its own decisions about who it trades with.
