Days of protests over road safety in Bangladesh looked to be fizzling out on Tuesday after around 150 people were injured in clashes with riot police and pro-government thugs started wielding iron bars.

Nine days of protests saw tens of thousands of teenagers and students paralyse traffic in the capital Dhaka and beyond. Eight buses were torched and hundreds of vehicles vandalised.

Students said on Tuesday that many went back to school as they fear further government repression if the protests continued. “We are panicked. We hear that some of the students who took part in yesterday’s protests have been arrested,” said a student.

Another student, Ratul Abdullah, said four of his friends have been missing since Monday. “Today everything is normal. Students have returned to their classes,” said Mahbubur Rahman, head of Bangladesh’s secondary and higher education authority.

Some 200 students at a state-run university in western city of Rajshahi however joined a march and rally, a student activist of the university said.

Court order
Also, a court on Tuesday ordered authorities to send award-winning photographer Shahidul Alam to hospital for treatment, a lawyer said, after the veteran journalist and rights activist accused police of beating him up in custody.

Mr. Alam, 63, was arrested at his Dhaka residence by plainclothes policemen on Sunday after he went live with Al Jazeera speaking about the protests.

A lower court on Monday remanded him into custody for seven days after police pressed preliminary charges against him under the country’s controversial Internet law.

But in a rare move, the High Court on Tuesday suspended the remand and instead ordered him shifted to a state-run hospital in Dhaka after his wife filed a petition, said his lawyer Jyotirmoy Barua.

Bangladesh authorities blocked internet yesterday barring the few AL terrorists posting rosy posts since 4 days whereas their colleagues in Chattra League are beating up and hitting protesters on the streets.
No mention of attacks on journalists, no mention of sexual harassment, torture and abuse by ALstudent wing [chattra league ].
This coward terrorist woman used police and her student wing against her young population protesting for road safety.
