Bangladesh PM urges garment makers to diversify exports

January 03, 2013 (Bangladesh)

Bangladesh PM Sheikh Hasina
Urging garment and jute entrepreneurs in the country to reduce reliance on traditional export items, Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has asked them to diversify their exports and tap new foreign markets where Bangladeshi products are in demand, so as to bring more foreign exchange to the national economy.

Speaking at the opening ceremony of the 18th Dhaka International Trade Fair (DITF) at Sher-e-Bangla Nagar in Dhaka, she said as demand for jute is on a rise, globally, Bangladesh Government has started reviving closed jute mills in the country.

The trade fair, being organized by the Commerce Ministry and the Export Promotion Bureau (EPB), has drawn participation of 31 entrepreneurs from Bangladesh and 11 other countries, whose products are being displayed across 506 stalls at the fair.

Speaking at the inaugural ceremony, Commerce Minister GM Quader said producers cannot stop at production, as in present times of competition, ensuring quality and strategically marketing of goods are also equally important.

He said Bangladesh should focus on exporting garments with better value propositions, as these goods have high demand in international markets.

Vice-Chairman of EPB, Shubhashish Bose said looking at the present export scenario it is likely that the country would manage to achieve the export target of US$ 28 billion set for the current Bangladeshi fiscal that ends on June 30, 2013.
