Bangladesh picks India’s Shyam Benegal to direct Bangabandhu biopic

The Bangladesh government has chosen famous Indian film director Shyam Benegal for a biographical film on Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.

A team of Bangladeshis will assist Benegal as part of an agreement with India to direct the film, State Minister for Information Tarana Halim told reporters at the Secretariat in Dhaka on Monday.

The shooting will begin after a review of the script by the members of Bangabandhu’s family, she said.

Benegal, who has received the Padma Shri, Padma Bhushan and Dadasaheb Phalke Award, were among the directors proposed by India for the film. Goutam Ghose and Kaushik Ganguly were also on the shortlist.

The government picked Benegal considering his experience as the director of the biopic on Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose and his other works, Tarana said.

The members of the assisting team of Bangladeshis will consist of a film specialist, a person who knew Bangabandhu, and a historian who also personally knew Bangabandhu, according to the state minister.

Bangladesh and India signed an agreement in New Delhi on Aug 27 last year in the presence of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and her Indian counterpart Narendra Modi on making the biopic of Bangabandhu and a documentary on the 1971 Liberation War.

A joint committee with 10 representatives from Bangladesh and nine from India were formed later and they had their first meeting in New Delhi on July 9 this year.

The names of the Bangladeshis to assist Benegal will be finalised at the committee’s next meeting, Tarana said.

“We want such a biopic on Bangabandhu that will be viewed again and again even by the next generations to understand what a great leader he was,” she said.

Tarana, an actress-turned-politician, said no name has yet been proposed for the role of Bangabandhu.

The cast will also be from both countries in line with the agreement. Both countries will also share the cost of making the film, she added.

The government has also shortlisted some Bangladeshi directors for the documentary on the Liberation War.

Young filmmakers have also been named on this list, Tarana said.

We have 160 some odd million people and we could not find ONE director capable of this task??

I was going to question the need for this film - then I had second thoughts.

Not going to hurt people's sensitivities.

But idolization of leaders and hero-worshipping is pointless in my opinion.

What next - a biopic about Bhutto?

They are making it targeting election. All work will be finished prior to election.

Will Benegal show him as a dedicated Muslim League activist in 1940s working with HS Surhawardy on the amputation of 'Bharatmata'? Will Benegal take some exerpt from his autobiography where he written facts which will not please the Indian ears? Will Benegal show that Mujib was hesitant on going to India after his release from Pakistani jail in 1972 and instead he gone to London first? Will this film shows that, Mujib was concerned about Indian designs and demanding strongly to Indira Gandhi to withdraw Indian forces within 3 months after 16th December 1971? Will it show that Mujib was distancing himself from India in his final year? May be it was the reason, India did not inform him about the 15th August, 1975 murder plot, despite extensive RAW presence in than Bangladesh? If not, then it is a garbage.

Voting this as the best post this month in this subsection. :-)

All true. :-)

He is a fantastic director. One of his excellent movies is "Making of the Mahatma" a joint Indo-South African production.

Of course, the documentary of an Indian agent should be made by an Indian director.

This is a disservice to BD people. Sheikh Hasina trying to further Indian Modi/Mamata propaganda in BD.

India is murdering BD border security forces, stealing water and land by changing river flows, and attempting to force 4 million Indian Muslims into BD as refugees.

BD has bigger current problems than Holocaust museums and Mujib films.

What is your opinion of this short film? Start watching from 2:00 minutes... to see how Pakistan surrendered under Niazi and how he was pursued to do so by Indian force!!!

And yet is economically doing much better than Pakistan.
