Mumbai : For the first time after legal resolution of disputes over sea borders between India and Bangladesh in 2014, Bangladesh Navy Vice Admiral visited Western Naval Command (WNC) in Mumbai on Wednesday.
Chief of Naval Staff Bangladesh Navy, Vice Admiral M Farid Habib, who was in the city on Tuesday and Wednesday, visited the headquarters of WNC and expressed gratitude to the Indian Navy for helping Bangladesh Naval Ship (BNS) during their visit to Mumbai, Indian Navy officials said.
Vice Admiral Habib interacted with Vice Admiral SPS Cheema, the Commander-in-Chief of WNC and acknowledged the role of Indian armed forces during the liberation of Bangladesh.
After the liberation of Bangladesh, India and Bangladesh have had a history of three decades of disputed sea boundaries which had hammered the economic development of both the countries. Both countries willingly and consensually approached the United Nations for peaceful resolution in 2009.
After five years, the dispute was resolved under the UN Convention on Law of the Sea in 2014. The UN tribunal awarded Bangladesh nearly four-fifths of disputed area and both the countries welcomed and accepted the tribunal’s judgment.
Vice Admiral Habib also interacted with other senior navy officers and visited indigenously built guided missile destroyer INS Kolkata and the local museum. Both the Navies share a robust relationship and visit each other’s ports. According to officials, Bangladesh Navy Ship Somudra Joy is expected to participate in the International Fleet Review – 2016 to be held at Visakhapatanam.
