Bangladesh leads other South Asian nations in Internet access
June 06 2017 11:45 PM

By Mizan Rahman/Dhaka

Bangladesh has advanced significantly in Internet connectivity and effectively led major South Asian countries, with nearly 42% of total population using Internet for various purposes, according to official sources.
The latest data from the Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) shows that the total number of Internet users has reached 67.24mn at the end of
February, 2017.
The whopping number is around 41.52% of the total population of the country, leaving many Asian powerhouses behind with a
huge margin.

According to available data from some Internet users’ monitoring sites, neighbouring India has over 460mn Internet users, which is 34.83% of its total population.
Sri Lanka has 7mn Internet users, which is 29.30% of its total population.
In Pakistan, only 17.81% of its total population use Internet.

The number of Internet users surged in the past nine years from 2.67% in 2008 to 41.52 this year due to some breakthrough decisions and steps taken by the current government led by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

This year too, the government has given special priority to ICT, as Finance Minister Abul Maal Abdul Muhith has proposed an allocation of 39.74bn taka for the information and communication technology division, an amount which is 21.55bn taka more than the revised budget of 2016-17 year.

Muhith in his budget speech said around 18,500 government offices have been brought under a single network. The existing capacity of the submarine cable has been increased to 200 gbps (gigabits per second) from
44 gbps.

“As of April 2017, the number of mobile telephone and Internet subscribers has increased to around 133.1mn and 70mn
respectively,” he said.

The government also has plans to take the rate of Internet penetration in the country to 100%, ensuring high speed broadband internet at cheap rate to all the government offices, educational institutions, health centres and union parishads, expanding 3G network to all across the country and launching 4G by 2020.

“We have already brought all the sub-districts in the country under fibre optic cable network. Work under project titled Info Sarker-3 is going on to bring all the unions in the country under the network,” said State Minister for ICT division Zunaid Ahmed Palak.

“We have set a target of ensuring employment of 2mn people in ICT sector and achieve the export income of $5bn by 2021 by utilising the continuous policy support of the government of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and the digital dividends,” he added.

Palak said the proposed budged would play a catalytic role in achieving the aforesaid targets.
“Bangladesh will surely become a high middle income country by 2021 and high income country by 2041 with the continuous expansion of ICT sector,” Palak hoped.

i really have big doubt about Pakistan's 18% i mean even in all villages peoples use mobile internet and have internet access. even only FB have almost 30 million Pakistanis and E commerce in Pakistan is now earning in billions all with just 18% seems stupid. Pakistan govt should provide real figures.

even if we only take 30 million using FB its around 17 or 18% of Pakistan 180 million population with a note that not all Pakistani internet users using FB.

According to every international and unbiased survey Bangladesh ranks lowest in southasia in terms of internet peneteration. These are just typical feel good stats by Bangladesh government.

I don't think so. It's almost impossible to survive in Bangladesh without access to Internet. Certain public and education services are entirely based on the Internet.

Its the same case with other southasian countries but few metrpolitian cities cant define entire country. India so far has the highest internet peneteration as percentage of population 35%. Pakistan pathetically stands at 17% whereas bangladesh is currently at 14% according to independent data.

These data comes from isp, mobile operator which goes to independent comnission BTRC. Govt has no control on this particular data.
There are redudant connection for the same user (i use 4 active connection). Other than that data is correct.

I don't know how true this is...but, one of the biggest things we have going for us is our small land mass.

Putting up BTS Towers is obviously much easier than in say India or even Pakistan (terrain). So, 3G coverage has reached a large segment of the population.

But, I refuse to believe 42% of the population is using the internet. 30% in some shape or form...maybe. Then again, this probably includes stats like all students having to register for colleges via the internet as 'people using the internet for various purposes'.

Whereas in reality - you see hundreds of people in rural areas huddling around cyber cafes or roadside shops trying to get registered on 2-3 computers.

Hence what I am talking about different ways to measure it. Even in the standaridsed ones, there are different tiers of internet use.

I.e someone that uses internet 1 hour a week and someone that uses 5 hours per day both count for 1 person in the tally.

I suspect if you account for this and do a curve integral, the regression with GDP per capita will be a lot better.

Well India and Pakistan populations are largely found in high population density clusters too (Indus, Ganges, coasts, other rivers etc). In effect whole regions is like a Bunch of Bangladeshes stitched together, spread about a bit more maybe and having more emptier areas (but they only concern the last 20% or so of the population....so penetration there comes into the debate much later since we all below 50% threshold anyway in the high pop density areas to begin with).
