Bangladesh keen for establishing road, rail links with China, ASEAN countries

Bangladeshi State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shahriar Alam said that he looks forward to establishing direct road and rail links with China via Myanmar.

Speaking as the chief guest at a webinar "Bangladesh-China Development Cooperation: Experience Outlook" organised by the leading local thinktank Center for Policy Dialogue (CPD) on Thursday, he said, "We've formally approached the Chinese embassy in Dhaka for rail and road links between the two countries via Myanmar.

Bangladesh wanted to set a bullet train project , does anyone know if this project has been abandoned or is it a future project ?

I had visited the area near Myanmar border where border rail line and custom house are being built. There are quite a bit of work done (site and land prep, road, small scale infrastructure were done at that time) but issue will be largely political will in Bangladesh and significan change in the mindset of Myanmar political leadership. Not to mention, handling trouble making other neighbor on the wing and handling superpower agenda in the bay and around China. This is a true uphill battle but worth pushing with full force. Eventually linking deep sea terminals and Coxs bazar-Gundam rail line could create huge opportunity.

Had it not been for ASM Kibria, ex Awami league finance minister, Bangladesh would have connected by now. By including "via india" as main route in ESCAP, Kibria spoiled Bangladesh early implementation chance. Now that india killed idea of any connectivity to China, for "via Myanmar" connectivity project, government can expect support from all political and socio economic spectrums. Hope they prioritize and capitalize on it.

Good starting point could be start using rail to do existing export-import trade with Myanmar. Availability of rail sure will increase volume and opportunity for more business.

They're currently acquiring land for the Dhaka-Chittagong route as the feasibility study has been recently completed. Likely to bring in Chinese engineering firms.

@idune Bro, joining BRI could be BAL's way of distracting from its pro-India agenda. Don't fall for it.

India might use the initiative to create an avenue for importing and exporting goods to/from China through Bangladesh.

Well, india has its own borders with China although not optimal for commercial and steady communication. India China relation is in deep freeze and moving towards a long long winter. If current regime use BRI or any other way to come out of subservient relation and eliminate india interference, they will get my support for it. That is a far fetch wish for now.

I’m sure these stooges won’t do it. They are power hungry stooges propped by raw agents like me.

I dont see that as much of an issue. Greater economic activity and connections also increases interdependency.... this is a recipe for greater stability for all concerned. It will increase BD clout as the hub in the region and may even get us into Asean.

Bring it on i say.

Referring to the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), he said it would make it easier for us to connect with other ASEAN countries.
I am not sure if the Asian Highway route will also serve the Chinese OBOR projects/routes in our zone, but, the Asian Highway route is via Indian NE to MM to China/ASEAN. So, logically, this should also be the OBOR route.

However, I am not sure of the Indian thinking. Will it allow designating the AH portion in its land as also OBOR route?

A few months ago I calculated the price of one way Dhaka-Chittagong travel by Bullet trains to answer a question from @UKBengali. Hasina's cost estimation at $12billion will raise the fare to 12,000 Taka each way if the number of passengers every day was 27,000.

india will not let you connected to china forget this your geography is messed up sandwiched between MYM-IND

India and MM already accepted the Asian Highway route from Kolkata to Dhaka/Sylhet to Indian NE to MM. There is no way India will not allow access of Chinese goods in this route in MM.

However, the long term benefits will come not from roads and highways, but from building railway connections that can transport goods at cheaper prices.
