Bangladesh, India agree to curb border killings
At least 25 Bangladeshi civilians were killed in first 6 months of this year by Indian border forces, says rights body

DHAKA, Bangladesh

Bangladesh and India on Saturday agreed to launch joint border patrols to curb killings and crimes.

"Both sides have agreed to extend joint border patrolling, mass awareness programs and necessary socio-economic development activities with a view to downing the incidents of murders, injuries and attacks on unarmed civilians of both countries to zero level," said a joint statement issued after a four-day conference attended by border forces of both countries in Bangladesh's capital Dhaka.

A Bangladesh-based rights watchdog in a report earlier in July said that at least 25 Bangladeshi civilians were killed by the Indian Border Security Force (BSF) in the first half of this year.

The two sides also agreed to educate citizens living in the border area about international law.

They also agreed to exchange digital photographs of smugglers and other criminals.

They also discussed the management of barbed wire fences on borders and common rivers.

The conference is being seen by observers as an effort to salvage ties after tensions due to a controversial citizenship register and law that could send thousands of ethnic Bengalis settled in India to Bangladesh, which is already struggling due to a Rohingya refugee wave which started in 2018 from neighboring Myanmar.

These efforts have become even more pronounced after Pakistan and China, India's arch rivals, were reportedly cozying up with Dhaka.

Tragic. It's time BGB enforce strict monitoring of activities close to the border. There should atleast 500 mts of no man land between both. Anyone without regard to nationality shall be shot down by both. Then all these illegal smuggling and border crossing with stop. Both can enter each other countries legally with a visa.

Why not? Do you not think people crossing border illegally for nefarious purposes need to be shot down? Do you think India Pakistan borders allow for such activities?

Shooting down is the only way to discourage people from entering restricted areas. I am saying this not just for Bangladeshis but for Indians as well. There are sovereign borders and not gully muhallas to roam around freely.

There are also Indian smugglers who cross the border all the time but BGB never shoot at them. Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) would place them under arrest and send them to jail.

Nobody said freely roam around i already said detention is ok. But shoot down someone crossing a porous border arbitrarily drawn in 1947 - sometimes with isolated enclaves? shooting down people crossing for their cattle grazing across ? what nefarious purposes. You want to shoot down fathers, brothers who move for their livelihood?

You need to observe what kind of a monster indian nationalism made you. A madrasi guy cheering for killing bengalis who just move.

This trait of opening fire on illegal immigrants or border crossings is found in many places elsewhere in the world, but as far as the India-Bangladesh border is concerned, such behaviour is reprehensible, even with regard to the criminals who provoke such action.

You have a point, a prima facie case, although I do not agree with it (obviously; if I was in agreement, I wouldn't be doing it, I wouldn't do morally offensive things deliberately).

Here's my proposition.

If you can identify those specific instances where you believe there is this 'moral relativism', I am willing to explain my stand in full detail, and to change if you have rational and logically tenable refutations. Just to ensure that this does not degenerate into a quagmire of opposing opinions, we can mutually agree on steps to be taken.
