Dhaka – Dhaka has ruled out possibility of cutting diplomatic ties with Islamabad as relations between Bangladesh and Pakistan have reached to the lowest ebb recently over trial of crimes committed during 1971 war between the two countries.
Bangladesh Foreign Minister Abul Hassan Mahmood Ali came up with the statement in parliament Tuesday while responding to questions in the House.
“It is not like that diplomatic tie has to be cut if there is any tension. But in many cases we see that diplomatic tie remains active even in the war times,” the minister told a questioner.
“We are observing the whole situation. Time is very important. We are not thinking of cutting any ties right now,” he added.
The minister’s statement came at a time when the two countries took a tit-for-tat strategy over their relations.
Police in Bangladesh arrested an official of Pakistan embassy in Dhaka Monday while a Bangladeshi official in Pakistan went missing for nearly six hours.
In earlier instances, Bangladesh asked Pakistan to withdraw an official from Dhaka for the official’s suspected links with terrorists that prompted Pakistan to request Dhaka to withdraw one of its officials in Islamabad.
Diplomatic tension between the countries intensified when Pakistan foreign ministry issued a statement over execution of two war crimes convicts in Dhaka in November.
The Pakistani ministry says it was in grave concern over the developments in Bangladesh while Dhaka called the statement an attempt to infringe its domestic affairs.
Civic groups in Bangladesh subsequently asked the government to cut diplomatic relations with Pakistan.
On Tuesday, the minister said time will say the steps Bangladesh need to take over the relations with Pakistan.
“We have to keep in mind the national interest,” Mahmood Ali said
With the latest development Bangladeshi foreign ministry summoned Pakistani High Commissioner in Dhaka Shuja Alam to explain his government’s position.
The Bangladesh High Commission’s press wing personal staff Jahangir Hossain went missing on Monday afternoon hours after a Pakistan High Commission official in Dhaka was detained by police.
Both incidents have fuelled the tension between the two countries, already compounded by Pakistan’s comments on the trials of the 1971 war criminals and alleged terrorist links of officials of the Pakistan High Commission in Dhaka.
