Bangladesh deploys 600,000 security forces ahead of vote

[DHAKA] Bangladesh stepped up security Saturday in a bid to contain violence during a general election expected to see Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina win a record fourth term.
Authorities have deployed around 600,000 police, army and other security forces ahead of Sunday's vote, a senior official said, following a deadly campaign marred by clashes.
The forces - which also include the elite Rapid Action Battalion, navy, border and coast guards and auxiliary police units - are providing security to some 40,000 election booths.
"We have ensured the highest level of security in Bangladesh as per the capacity of the country," Rafiqul Islam of the election commission told AFP.
"We hope there will be a peaceful atmosphere," he said.

Clashes have gripped the Muslim majority country of 165 million in the run-up to the polls.
Thirteen people have been killed and thousands injured in skirmishes between supporters of Hasina's ruling Awami League and activists of the opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP).
The BNP, which boycotted the 2014 election, says its supporters have been deliberately targeted in a a bid to deter them from voting and rig the election in Hasina's favour.
The Awami League and BNP are leading their own alliances in the country's 11th parliamentary polls since independence in 1971.
The BNP, whose leader Khaleda Zia is in prison on graft charges, has accused the election commission of bias during the electoral campaign - a charge rejected by its chief commissioner, K.M Nurul Huda.
The opposition says that some 14,000 of its activists have been detained since the election schedule was announced on November 8. It also alleges that around 12,000 activists were injured in attacks by ruling party followers. The ruling party denies the allegation.
Rafiqul Islam said election authorities were still hopeful the vote would be credible. The United States has raised concerns about the elections while the United Nations called for greater efforts to make the vote fair.
"We're trying our best to have a free and fair election," he said.
Islam added that authorities may slow down internet speeds on election day in an effort to "prevent the spread of rumours", that could trigger unrest.
The country's telecoms regulator shut down higher speed internet services on Thursday before restoring them on Friday morning.
The election commission has also imposed restrictions on public transport and cars on polling day in an effort to maintain security and "conduct the election smoothly", he said.

Its just selection. Equal plateform hasnt been provided to the opposition parties. Whats the use of these elections?? The dictatorship of Haseena will continue.
Same can be said for USA. Other parties don't get the same platform like Republican party or Democratic party get. Anyway this thread is about election updates.

This member derailed my thread and built his own to defend its sham joke elections. it looks like the mod.s like to ignore certain members and only check on Pakistani posts.
My post was about comparison of Bangladeshi police state with Pakistani elections recently. Which Banglas have tried to divert and I've responded to their attacks with relevance. The stats they are putting up they have been attacking also like US travel advisory. Thes eBanglas using talking points from their masters US and india ehich even they themselves question when they do the same on Bangladesh.
Bangladeshis have used this forum to display their fudged inflated economy as comparison to PAkistan, so once you show them the mirror they resort to whataboutery, personal attacks and name calling to protect their authoritarian failed state. This fake hype of economic growth where Bangladesh HDI 2018 and per capita is lower than Pakistaneven after this fake 30% growth figure on one sector only, the income inequality is the worst in the region and poor Bengalis are still living like slaves fed on propaganda.
This forum will be used to not report ground reality of the internet ban, opposition workers arrests or the mobile service blockage so I'd refrain from posting in this fake forum.

A inclusive election in name but what we are watching only BAL getting the chance election campaign in our area we haven't seen the single poster of BNP the main opposition party . This Election may be going to prove we are not yet ready for democracy we need caretaker type govt. next few times to conduct free and fair election .

After road safety protests, Bangladesh Government has exposed itself how insecure it is. No space for opposition in their english print media or even the internet. Opinions [in Bangladeshi English media] are all pro-ruling party and venomous towards opposition. Language is ridiculous they are calling the opposition as terrorists and extremists. while there is no space provided for opposition for a rebuttal or response. Almost all of them are in jail with their 90000+ voters LOL. Bangladesh is looking like North Korea. All democratic code of ethics are broken. Hasina is behaving like a civil martial law administrator with absolute powers.
